Serenity on the Water: IWAI Marks International Day of Yoga Aboard Brahmaputra Vessels

Guwahati: In a unique blend of wellness and maritime tradition, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) celebrated the International Day of Yoga 2026 with synchronized sessions along the expansive Brahmaputra River in Assam on June 21, 2026. Transforming floating vessels into serene wellness spaces, the organization took the nationwide celebration directly onto National Waterway-2, beautifully merging the ancient practice of yoga with the natural rhythm of the region’s life-giving river.

A Floating Celebration Across Assam

The celebrations spanned several vital locations along the river, bringing together IWAI officials, crew members, and local residents in a shared pursuit of health. At Pandu in Guwahati, participants gathered on the decks of the MPT Sukhdev and HPT B.R. Ambedkar to practice the Common Yoga Protocol while sailing gently down the Brahmaputra. Further downstream at Jogighopa, a dedicated session took place aboard the WB Saffron, while the community at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh joined the movement aboard the WB Iris and WB Tansy. These floating venues offered a distinct perspective on the day, highlighting how inland waterways can link both regional commerce and community well-being.

Sailing Toward Healthy Living

This year’s observance centered around the global theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing,’ putting a spotlight on how consistent yoga practice fosters physical vitality and mental clarity across all generations. The event served a dual purpose, advocating for a balanced lifestyle while drawing widespread attention to the vast potential and cultural significance of India’s network of inland rivers.

“Yoga has emerged as a global movement for health and wellness,” noted Shri Prabin Bora, Director (I/C) of the IWAI Regional Office in Guwahati, during the event. “Celebrating the International Day of Yoga on the Brahmaputra reflects IWAI’s commitment to promoting healthy living while showcasing the country’s inland waterways.”

Through this successful initiative, the IWAI beautifully demonstrated that the path to mindfulness and vitality can flow effortlessly alongside the vital waterways that drive the region’s growth and connectivity.
