Flowing Toward Wellness: NMCG Celebrates International Day of Yoga 2026 Across the Ganga Basin

New Delhi: On June 21, 2026, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), representing the Ministry of Jal Shakti, beautifully bridged the gap between personal health and environmental vitality by hosting a special celebration for the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY). While the flagship event filled New Delhi with energy, the spirit of the day rippled across the entire Ganga Basin, uniting thousands of people along India’s sacred lifelines.

This year’s global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” took center stage, spotlighting how yoga fosters lifelong physical, mental, and emotional resilience.

A Diverse Coalition for River and Body

The New Delhi event brought together a passionate mix of policymakers, environmental guardians, and the next generation. The gathering saw active participation from:

  • Senior Leadership:  V. L. Kantha Rao (Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation) and Shri Ashok K. K. Meena (Secretary, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation).

  • Grassroots Guardians: Members of the Yamuna Task Force, weekly Yamuna cleanliness drive volunteers, and local ecological NGOs.

  • The Youth: Energetic school children from the Project Eco Roots Foundation alongside local youth volunteers and community leaders.

In his address to the gathering,  V. L. Kantha Rao urged everyone to make yoga a permanent fixture of their lives rather than a one-day ritual. He emphasized that daily practice transforms individual health, which naturally cascades into a healthier, more conscious society.

Echoes Across the Ganga Basin

The celebration extended far beyond the capital. Synchronized yoga sessions according to the Common Yoga Protocol came alive at ghats, riverfronts, and water bodies throughout the Ganga Basin.

Led by State Program Management Groups (SPMGs), District Ganga Committees (DGCs), and the dedicated Ganga Praharis (guardians of the river), local communities and educational institutions turned out in large numbers. The synchronized movement symbolized a shared vow to restore both inner peace and the purity of India’s waterways.

Rooting Wellness in Nature: “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”

Demonstrating that self-care and earth-care go hand in hand, participants transitioned from their yoga mats to the soil by joining the nationwide green campaign, “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.” This plantation drive added a layer of ecological restoration to the day’s wellness goals.

The Connected Ecosystem: The celebration perfectly mirrored the broader vision of the Namami Gange programme. Just as yoga brings balance and discipline to the mind, planting trees brings balance to the river ecosystem. Increased green cover strengthens riverbanks, prevents soil erosion, and aids groundwater recharge—proving that sustainable rivers depend entirely on environmentally conscious lifestyles and active public participation.

Participants also drew inspiration from a broader message delivered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the main national celebrations in Kolkata, West Bengal. The Prime Minister reminded the nation that modern societal challenges often stem from lifestyle imbalances, positioning yoga as a practical, accessible path toward harmony, discipline, and holistic well-being.
