Landmark Road Projects to Boost Connectivity, Defence and Economic Growth
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh took a significant leap in infrastructure development as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath jointly inaugurated the 63-km six-lane Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway and the four-lane Lucknow-Hardoi Expressway, developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at a combined cost of over ₹4,850 crore. The leaders also laid the foundation stone for a four-lane flyover at Engineering College Chauraha in Lucknow, aimed at easing one of the city’s busiest traffic junctions.
Transforming Regional Connectivity
Built at a cost of nearly ₹4,200 crore, the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Lucknow, Kanpur and Unnao while offering safer and more comfortable travel. Rajnath Singh described it as a transformative project that would strengthen connectivity and create fresh opportunities for trade, investment and employment across the region.
He praised Nitin Gadkari for delivering world-class highway infrastructure in record time and credited Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for accelerating Uttar Pradesh’s development under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to him, the state’s infrastructure expansion is setting new benchmarks nationally.
A Strategic Defence Corridor
Rajnath Singh highlighted that both Lucknow and Kanpur are vital nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor. Lucknow houses the BrahMos missile integration centre and DRDO laboratories, making it a major hub for defence research and manufacturing, while Kanpur has a long-standing defence production ecosystem.
The improved highway connectivity, he said, will strengthen logistics, enhance supply chains and facilitate seamless movement between defence establishments, further reinforcing India’s vision of defence self-reliance.
Growth Beyond Highways
Emphasising that better connectivity drives economic prosperity, Rajnath Singh said improved roads attract industries, encourage investment and generate employment. Reduced transportation costs will benefit businesses, while farmers will gain quicker access to markets and better returns for their produce.
The ₹541-crore Lucknow-Hardoi four-lane highway will improve connectivity from the Lucknow Ring Road to Hardoi and eventually create a direct corridor from Ghazipur through Lucknow to Palia, benefiting eastern Uttar Pradesh and border districts through faster freight movement and enhanced commercial activity.
Engineering College Flyover to Ease Congestion
The foundation stone was also laid for the Engineering College Chauraha Flyover, connecting the Sitapur and Ayodhya highways. The junction currently handles traffic from Jankipuram, Jankipuram Extension, Polytechnic, Munshipulia, Khurramnagar and TedhiPulia, leading to frequent congestion. The new flyover is expected to provide long-term relief for thousands of daily commuters.

A Larger Vision for Lucknow
Rajnath Singh revealed that on his request, the state government approved the widening of the 50-km Gosain Ganj-Mohanlalganj-Bani-Haroni road, which will connect the Purvanchal, Lucknow-Kanpur and Agra Expressways while linking four major national highways.
He also highlighted Lucknow’s ongoing transformation through the construction of 15 flyovers and underpasses, redevelopment of Gomti Nagar Railway Terminal, modernization of Aishbagh, City Station, Daliganj, Badshahnagar and Charbagh railway stations, and construction of new railway overbridges across the division.
The Defence Minister further welcomed the expansion of the Lucknow Metro, noting that work has commenced on the recently approved 11-km Charbagh-Vasant Kunj East-West Corridor, which will further strengthen the city’s public transport network.
Towards an Economic Powerhouse
Describing Lucknow as an emerging “megapolis”, Rajnath Singh said modern transport infrastructure, expressways, metro connectivity and ring roads would transform not only the state capital but also neighbouring towns into an integrated economic region. He expressed confidence that these projects would attract industries, generate employment and accelerate Uttar Pradesh’s emergence as one of India’s strongest economic engines.
Concluding his address, Rajnath Singh thanked engineers, designers, contractors and workers for their contribution and urged citizens to maintain public infrastructure and follow traffic rules. He said sustained development, good governance and world-class connectivity would ensure that farmers, entrepreneurs, youth and every section of society shared equally in Uttar Pradesh’s growth story.
