Lucknow: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 65-year-old woman was abandoned by her two sons after being admitted to Civil Hospital for an eye surgery. Despite both sons earning well, they refused to take care of their mother due to pressure from their wives.
The elderly woman, identified as Nirmala Devi, was admitted to the hospital by her sons, Suraj Yadav and Arvind Yadav, under the pretext of an eye operation. However, after getting her admitted, both sons disappeared and did not return for over a month. The hospital staff took care of her medication and meals during this period, but after 45 days, they had no choice but to discharge her. Having nowhere to go, she walked to the Hazratganj police station, where she broke down in front of the officers.
Inspector Vikram Singh of Hazratganj police station stated that Nirmala Devi’s late husband was a follower in the army. After his untimely demise, she worked as a domestic help to raise her sons. The elder son runs a photocopy business at the High Court, earning a good income, while the younger son also has a stable source of income.
Nirmala told the police that she was hard of hearing and had vision problems. Her sons admitted her to the hospital for surgery but did not visit even once during her stay. The hospital authorities provided her with food and medicine but eventually had to discharge her due to the prolonged stay. With no one to turn to, she sought help from the police.
The police immediately traced both sons, one from Krishna Nagar and the other from Faizullaganj in Madiyanv. They were brought to the police station by 4 PM and scolded for their negligence. The inspector made them sign a written apology and an agreement to take care of their mother in turns, each keeping her for two months at a time.
A special team comprising a female sub-inspector and two constables has been assigned to check on Nirmala Devi every week and record her well-being in the general diary. The police warned the sons that any further mistreatment would lead to strict legal action against them.
