Egypt Claims Historic First World Cup Victory with 3-1 Comeback Win Over New Zealand

New Delhi: Egypt celebrated a landmark moment in its football history on Monday, securing its first-ever FIFA World Cup victory with a thrilling 3-1 comeback win over New Zealand in a Group G match in Vancouver.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Egypt produced a spirited second-half performance, with Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah, and Trezeguet each finding the net to turn the match around and deliver a memorable victory. The triumph came more than 92 years after Egypt made its World Cup debut, making it one of the most significant results in the nation’s football history.

New Zealand started brightly and took the lead in the 15th minute when defender Finn Surman headed home from close range. The Kiwis continued to press early, with midfielder Sarpreet Singh and his teammates creating several chances and putting the Egyptian defense under pressure.

Egypt gradually grew into the contest, with captain Mohamed Salah and Emam Ashour coming close to equalizing before the break. Shortly after halftime, Salah tested goalkeeper Max Crocombe, who produced a fine save to preserve New Zealand’s lead.

The momentum shifted in Egypt’s favor in the 58th minute when Ziko headed home the equalizer. Nine minutes later, Salah put Egypt ahead with a powerful low strike, sparking celebrations among the Egyptian supporters.

Trezeguet sealed the victory eight minutes from time, finishing off a swift attack to make it 3-1 and secure all three points.

An emotional Salah described the win as a historic achievement for Egyptian football. “There are no words to describe this victory. It is a huge moment for our players, coaching staff and supporters. This result will be remembered in Egypt’s football history for years to come,” he said.

New Zealand coach Darren Bazeley admitted the defeat was difficult to accept. “We played very well in the first half and created several chances, but we could not maintain that intensity after the break. Egypt raised their level and deserved the result,” he said.

The victory keeps Egypt firmly in contention in Group G, while New Zealand now faces a must-win situation in its remaining fixtures.
