Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has expanded its battery-operated e-tricycle distribution scheme to make education and daily commuting easier for girls with disabilities across the state.
Under the scheme for the financial year 2026-27, eligible female students with 40 per cent or more disability and aged 16 years or above will be provided battery-operated e-tricycles free of cost. The government has set a target of distributing 8,060 e-tricycles, with 20 beneficiaries to be selected from each of the state’s 403 Assembly constituencies.
The initiative, being implemented by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, is aimed at improving mobility and helping students overcome transportation-related barriers while travelling between their homes and educational or training institutions.
E-Tricycles Worth Up to Rs 65,000
Under the scheme, eligible students will receive a battery-operated e-tricycle costing up to Rs 65,000. The facility will benefit girls studying in recognised schools, colleges and universities as well as those enrolled in eligible training institutions.
The initiative is expected to be particularly significant for students living in rural and remote areas, where limited transportation facilities can make regular attendance at educational institutions difficult.
Benefits to Cover All 403 Assembly Constituencies
The government has designed the scheme with a statewide coverage model. Each of Uttar Pradesh’s 403 Assembly constituencies will have 20 eligible girls selected for the benefit, taking the total target to 8,060 e-tricycles.
Beneficiaries will be identified and verified at the district level before the vehicles are distributed. Officials will verify the eligibility of applicants and the documents submitted by them in accordance with the prescribed rules.
The scheme is intended to ensure that the benefits reach students in both urban and rural areas rather than remaining concentrated in major cities.
40% Disability Required
To qualify, a student must have a disability of 40 per cent or more and must be currently studying or undergoing training at a recognised educational or training institution.
Applicants will be required to furnish the prescribed disability certificate or Unique Disability ID (UDID) card, along with other documents specified under the scheme. The final selection will be made after verification of eligibility and supporting documents.
The beneficiary must also be at least 16 years old.
Applications Open
The application process has begun. Eligible students can apply through the district-level office of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities or through the department’s designated portal.
The government has said that the verification process will be carried out at the district level before eligible beneficiaries receive their e-tricycles.
Focus on Education and Self-Reliance
The scheme is being positioned not merely as a mobility-support measure but as an initiative to strengthen access to education, skill development and future employment opportunities for girls with disabilities.
For many students, difficulties in travelling to school, college or training centres can affect regular attendance and, in some cases, force them to discontinue their education. Providing personal mobility support is expected to help such students travel more independently and continue their studies.
The initiative also seeks to promote greater social participation and self-reliance among women and girls with disabilities by reducing their dependence on others for transportation.
Government Stresses Inclusive Education
The expansion of the scheme to all 403 Assembly constituencies reflects the government’s focus on providing more equitable access to support programmes for persons with disabilities.
Officials said the objective is to ensure transparent and effective delivery of benefits to eligible beneficiaries and to strengthen opportunities for education and skill development among girls with disabilities.
Dr Amit Kumar Rai, Deputy Director in the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, said the expansion of the e-tricycle scheme was intended to ensure that female students do not face mobility-related difficulties while pursuing education or training.
He said eligible students with 40 per cent or more disability would now be covered under the expanded scheme. After verification of the required documents and eligibility at the district level, e-tricycles will be provided to selected beneficiaries according to the prescribed procedure.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the government’s broader efforts towards inclusive education, equal opportunity and empowerment of persons with disabilities, while making it easier for eligible girls to continue their academic and vocational journeys.
