CM Yogi Orders Tech-Driven Railway Security Overhaul in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed authorities to further modernize and strengthen railway security across the state, emphasizing the use of advanced technology, faster police response, enhanced passenger safety, and a strict zero-tolerance policy towards crime on the railway network.

Chairing a high-level review meeting of the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Lucknow, the Chief Minister said Uttar Pradesh, which handles one of the country’s largest volumes of rail traffic, must ensure the highest standards of security for millions of passengers who use rail services every day.

“Passenger safety, women’s security, crime prevention, and prompt police assistance must remain top priorities,” he said, adding that there should be no space for criminal or anti-social activities within the railway ecosystem.

Focus on Technology and Smart Surveillance

The Chief Minister instructed officials to maximize the use of modern technologies to strengthen security at railway stations, platforms, and onboard trains. He called for expanded deployment of CCTV surveillance, drone monitoring, digital verification systems, and technology-enabled policing to detect and prevent criminal activities.

During the meeting, officials highlighted ongoing measures such as joint patrols, CCTV-based monitoring, drone surveillance of railway tracks, digital verification of suspicious individuals through inspection applications, and strengthening intelligence networks. Authorities are also keeping a close watch on scrap markets and other sensitive locations to prevent railway-related crimes.

Yogi directed officials to launch focused campaigns to completely eliminate incidents of stone-pelting on trains and railway infrastructure, a recurring concern in several regions.

GRP Protects Millions Daily

According to a presentation made during the review meeting, the GRP, established in 1867, currently operates through six divisions, 65 police stations, and 89 temporary outposts across Uttar Pradesh.

The force is responsible for safeguarding more than 3,000 trains, nearly 1,550 railway stations, and over 3 million passengers every day, making it one of the country’s most significant railway policing networks.

The Chief Minister stressed the need for stronger coordination between the GRP, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), railway authorities, and local police agencies to ensure seamless security management.

Crowd Management and Passenger Convenience

Reviewing crowd management arrangements, Yogi instructed officials to ensure smooth passenger movement during festivals, major events, recruitment examinations, and other occasions that witness heavy footfall at railway stations.

He directed authorities to strengthen entry and exit control systems, queue management, public announcement mechanisms, and round-the-clock CCTV monitoring. Effective coordination with railway authorities, he said, would be critical in preventing overcrowding and ensuring passenger convenience.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that public awareness campaigns, safety outreach programs, youth and parent counseling initiatives, the Rail Mitra network, and swift prosecution efforts have contributed significantly to reducing incidents of stone-pelting across several railway divisions.

Women’s Safety and Child Protection

The Chief Minister reiterated that women’s safety must remain a core priority across the state’s railway network. He directed officials to continue strengthening measures that ensure a secure travel environment for female passengers.

The meeting also reviewed efforts related to anti-human trafficking operations and the recovery of missing children.

Officials reported that under Operation Muskaan, GRP teams recovered 860 children between January 1 and May 26, 2026. Through various rescue and rehabilitation initiatives, authorities have successfully reunited 2,325 individuals with their families.

The Chief Minister praised the efforts and directed officials to further strengthen these humanitarian and child-protection campaigns.

Faster Justice and Future Preparedness

Reviewing prosecution mechanisms, Yogi emphasized the importance of ensuring swift and effective punishment for offenders. He instructed officials to strengthen investigation and prosecution processes to improve conviction rates and deter criminal activity.

The Chief Minister also discussed the future expansion and modernization of the GRP. He directed officials to identify manpower and equipment requirements and assured state government support for strengthening railway policing capabilities.

Additionally, he instructed departments to coordinate with the Ministry of Railways and the Railway Board regarding infrastructure and operational requirements that need support at the national level.

Preparations Begin for Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 2027

The meeting also reviewed preparations for the Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 2027, one of the largest religious gatherings in the country.

Yogi directed officials to begin planning comprehensive security and crowd-management strategies well in advance. He stressed the need for timely coordination among all concerned districts, railway authorities, and security agencies to ensure the safe movement of pilgrims during the event.

ISO Recognition for Hardoi GRP Station

During the review, officials informed the Chief Minister that the GRP police station in Hardoi has become North India’s first GRP station to receive ISO 9001 certification, a milestone reflecting efforts to improve service standards and operational efficiency.

With an increasing focus on technology, surveillance, passenger welfare, and crime prevention, the Uttar Pradesh government is seeking to transform railway security into a modern, intelligence-driven system capable of meeting the demands of one of India’s busiest rail networks.
