Lucknow – To commemorate the International Week of Deaf Persons, the Department of ENT, in collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), Lucknow, organised a public awareness program on newborn hearing screening at Dr. Ram Prakash Gupta Memorial Hospital on Saturday.
The program highlighted the crucial need for early identification of hearing loss in newborn babies, as undetected cases can severely affect speech, language, and social development. Experts stressed that if screening is conducted before a baby is one month old, and a hearing deficit is detected, the child stands the best chance of achieving their full developmental potential. The event was organised under the aegis of the Cochlear Implant Group of India (CIGI).
The institute’s Director, Prof. (Dr.) C. M. Singh, presided over the event as the Chief Guest and lauded the initiative, calling such awareness programs a vital contribution to society.
A key attraction was a “Nukkad Natak” and a poem recital on the theme of newborn hearing screening by MBBS students, which captivated the audience and delivered the message effectively.

Prominent speakers included Prof. (Dr.) Dipti Agarwal (Head, Department of Paediatrics) and Mr. Mayank Awasthi (Audiologist and Speech Therapist), who shared valuable insights on the role of timely detection. Dr. Taruni Lalchandani (Assistant Professor, ENT), the Organising Secretary, gave an overview of the program and underscored the importance of addressing the psycho-social disconnect faced by children with hearing impairment.
The event was graced by senior dignitaries, including Prof. (Dr.) Vikram Singh (Chief Medical Superintendent), Prof. (Dr.) Tanveer Roshan (Medical Superintendent), and Prof. (Dr.) Bhuvan Chandra Tiwari (Head, Department of Cardiology).
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ashish Chandra Agarwal (Additional Professor and Head, Department of ENT).
