DRDO Offers Lightweight Armour Technology Capable of Withstanding 30 mm Armour-Piercing Threats to Indian Industry

New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has offered its advanced lightweight armour technology to Indian manufacturers, aiming to strengthen domestic defence production and reduce dependence on imported protection systems.

Developed by Pune-based Research & Development Establishment (Engineers), or R&DE(E), the technology uses advanced composite panels designed to provide protection against 30 mm armour-piercing threats. According to the reported test results, the panels meet the protection requirements of STANAG 4569 Level 6.

DRDO is inviting domestic companies to acquire production rights through an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the Transfer of Technology (ToT). The initiative is expected to support indigenous manufacturing capabilities and establish local supply chains for advanced military armour.

Lightweight protection is particularly important for modern combat vehicles, as conventional heavy armour can affect mobility, fuel efficiency and payload capacity. The new technology could help vehicle designers balance crew protection with operational performance.

Potential applications include light tanks such as the Zorawar, Future Infantry Combat Vehicles (FICVs) and upgrades to existing main battle tanks. Lightweight armour could also help offset the additional weight of modern sensors, radar equipment and active protection systems.

The technology transfer initiative represents another step towards strengthening India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and advancing self-reliance in military equipment.
