AI-Driven System Aims to Improve Transparency, Efficiency and Timely Benefits for Students
Lucknow: In a major step towards strengthening the delivery of welfare schemes through technology, the Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Piramal Foundation for Education Leadership (PFEL) to modernise the state’s scholarship system and enhance governance through digital innovation.
The MoU was signed at Bhagidari Bhawan in Gomti Nagar in the presence of Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare Aseem Arun, Principal Secretary Anurag Yadav, and Director of Social Welfare Sanjeev Singh. Piramal Foundation Core Team members Ghanshyam Soni and Aradhana Khetan welcomed the dignitaries with saplings, while senior officials from both organisations discussed the implementation roadmap.
The partnership will initially focus on strengthening the scholarship programme by integrating the entire process—from application to disbursement—with digital technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and modern management systems. The initiative is expected to ensure that eligible students receive scholarship benefits in a timely, transparent and efficient manner.
Explaining the project, Planning Officer and Deputy Director of Social Welfare Anand Kumar Singh said the first phase would concentrate on streamlining scholarship administration through technology-enabled monitoring and service delivery.
The collaboration will also prioritise capacity building of officials and staff at the state, district and block levels to improve implementation and strengthen administrative efficiency.
As part of the initiative, a dedicated Scholarship Programme Management Unit (PMU) will be established to oversee the operation and monitoring of scholarship schemes. Similar support mechanisms may also be created at the district level based on operational requirements.
Addressing the gathering, Asim Arun said the objective of the partnership extends beyond technological upgrades. “Our goal is not only to introduce technology but to strengthen good governance, transparency, accountability and ensure that welfare schemes effectively reach the last beneficiary. This collaboration will make the department’s functioning more robust, improve coordination at various levels and ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive scheme benefits in a simpler, more transparent and time-bound manner,” he said.
Senior Programme Director of the Piramal Foundation Dr Anupama Jha, along with senior officials from the Social Welfare Department and the Foundation, was also present at the event. The initiative is expected to accelerate the digital transformation of scholarship administration while making welfare delivery more accessible and accountable for students across Uttar Pradesh.
