Vinícius Júnior’s Goal Helps Brazil Hold Morocco to 1-1 Draw in Thrilling World Cup Clash

New Jersey: Brazil were forced to share points with Morocco after a 1-1 draw in their Group C encounter of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. A stunning equaliser from Vinícius Júnior ensured the five-time champions recovered after conceding an early goal in a high-intensity contest.

Morocco, the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, shocked the 80,000-strong crowd by taking an early lead. Ismail Sabri found the net in the 21st minute after Brahim Díaz broke through Brazil’s defence and delivered a precise pass that split the backline. Sabri then chipped the ball over advancing goalkeeper Alisson to give Morocco a 1-0 advantage.

Brazil responded with urgency and restored parity in the 32nd minute. Bruno Guimarães delivered a sharp pass from the left flank, which Vinícius Júnior converted with a powerful first-time volley inside the penalty area, beating Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. The goal marked Vinícius Júnior’s first for the national team, sparking relief among Brazilian supporters.

After the equaliser, Brazil began to dominate possession. Lucas Paquetá came close to scoring just before half-time with a header inside the box, but Bounou produced a brilliant diving save to deny him. Moments later, Raphinha also tested the Moroccan goalkeeper, who once again stood firm to preserve the scoreline.

At the other end, goalkeeper Alisson made a crucial intervention in first-half stoppage time, blocking a long-range effort from Neil Aynaoui before reacting quickly to deny Ayoub Amimooni on the rebound.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted his side were below expectations despite the draw. “We did not start well and struggled to control possession in the first half. Morocco are a strong team, but we should have been more composed. I am not satisfied with the result, as we expected a better performance,” he said, adding that the team will now focus on the next match.

Brazil defender Danilo described the draw as a “decent result” but acknowledged missed opportunities. “We had chances, especially in the second half, but lacked coordination at key moments,” he said.

Midfielder Bruno Guimarães also pointed to early mistakes in possession. “We made too many errors in passing, which allowed Morocco to counterattack. We improved after the equaliser, but we need to correct these mistakes moving forward,” he noted.

Despite the draw, Brazil remain in contention in Group C, though questions will be raised over their consistency as they continue their campaign for a record-extending sixth World Cup title.
