FIH Pro League Key to India’s World Cup Preparations, Says Coach Craig Fulton

Manpreet Singh Set to Equal Dilip Tirkey’s Record for Most International Appearances for India

New Delhi: Led by star drag-flicker and captain Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian men’s hockey team is gearing up for a crucial phase of the FIH Pro League 2025-26, with high-intensity matches against world-class opponents Netherlands and Germany. The tournament serves as an important testing ground ahead of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in August and the Asian Games in September.

India begins its Netherlands leg of the Pro League against the hosts on June 14, followed by back-to-back matches against Germany on June 17 and 18. The team will then face the Netherlands again on June 21. These fixtures provide a valuable opportunity for the Indian side to assess its form, combinations, and readiness against some of the strongest teams in international hockey.

The upcoming match against the Netherlands carries added significance for veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh. Having represented India in 411 international matches, Manpreet is set to equal the long-standing national record of 412 appearances held by former India captain and current Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, India’s chief coach Craig Fulton described the Pro League as a critical step in the team’s preparation for the World Cup.

“For us, the FIH Pro League is extremely important in the build-up to the World Cup. Playing top-ranked teams like the Netherlands and Germany gives us the opportunity to evaluate ourselves under the kind of pressure we expect at major tournaments,” Fulton said.

He added that the matches would allow the coaching staff to experiment with different player combinations and tactical approaches while adapting to European playing conditions, which will be particularly beneficial given that many World Cup matches will be played in the Netherlands.

“Our objective is to maintain aggressive pressure, execute effective counter-attacks, and gain a clear understanding of where we stand as a team. These games will help us identify our strengths and areas that need improvement before the World Cup,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Dilip Tirkey expressed his delight at Manpreet Singh’s impending milestone, calling it a reflection of the midfielder’s dedication and remarkable contribution to Indian hockey.

“Manpreet’s achievement is a testament to his commitment, consistency, and leadership. He has been the heartbeat of India’s midfield for many years and has played a major role in the team’s success, including the historic bronze medals at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics,” Tirkey said.

He added that it was a matter of immense pride to witness another Indian hockey great reaching such a landmark and wished Manpreet continued success in the years ahead.

“Records like these inspire future generations of players. I hope Manpreet continues to achieve new milestones and contribute to Indian hockey’s growth,” Tirkey remarked.

Supporting Tirkey’s views, Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh praised Manpreet’s journey, describing it as an example of dedication and perseverance.

“Representing India in over 400 international matches is an extraordinary accomplishment. Manpreet has played a pivotal role in India’s resurgence on the global hockey stage and continues to be an inspiration for young athletes,” he said.

As India prepares for two of the most important tournaments on the international calendar, the Pro League presents a valuable opportunity to fine-tune strategies, build momentum, and reinforce confidence against elite opposition. The performances in Rotterdam and later in England could provide a strong indication of India’s readiness to challenge for major honours in the months ahead
