Washington: A new diplomatic rift appears to be taking shape in the Middle East as differences emerge between the United States and its long-standing Arab ally, Saudi Arabia, over President Donald Trump’s latest approach to regional peace.
On May 25, Trump suggested through social media that any future peace agreement with Iran should be linked to broader regional participation in the Abraham Accords. He called on several Muslim-majority nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Pakistan, to normalize relations with Israel as part of a wider peace framework.
Saudi Arabia, however, quickly signaled that its position remains unchanged. Riyadh reiterated that formal ties with Israel would depend on a clear and credible pathway toward the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The disagreement comes amid shifting regional dynamics following the Gaza conflict. While several Arab nations normalized relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords, Saudi-Israeli normalization efforts stalled after the outbreak of war in Gaza.
Additional friction has reportedly emerged over security issues in the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, Saudi officials were dissatisfied with a US-backed maritime security initiative announced without full regional consultation. Riyadh is also believed to be wary of any action that could expose the kingdom to potential retaliation from Iran.
Analysts suggest that Saudi Arabia is increasingly prioritizing its own security and regional interests rather than automatically aligning with every US strategic initiative. Meanwhile, Iran is expected to capitalize on any widening gap between Washington and its Gulf partners.
The developments highlight the growing complexity of Middle Eastern geopolitics, where regional powers are carefully balancing security concerns, public opinion, and diplomatic priorities amid continuing tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
