Two Decades Later, ‘Viva’ Brings Back the Magic of India’s First Pop Girl Band

Mumbai: For an entire generation that grew up sharing songs over Bluetooth and using flip phones, the iconic pop group Viva was more than just a band — it was a cultural phenomenon. Now, nearly two decades after dominating India’s early 2000s pop scene, the beloved girl band is making a nostalgic comeback as its music returns to digital and audio streaming platforms.

Formed as India’s first all-girl pop band, Viva featured talented performers including Neha Bhasin, Seema Ramchandani, Pratichee Mohapatra, Mahua Kamat and Anushka Manchanda. At a time when the concept of a girl band was still new in India, Viva carved out a unique space in the country’s pop music landscape with its youthful sound, energetic performances and chart-topping tracks.

Following the release of their debut album, Seema Ramchandani exited the group. The remaining four members later released their second album, Viva! Reloaded, in 2003, which further strengthened the band’s popularity among young music lovers.

Now, in collaboration with JioStar, the band’s music and videos are being reintroduced to audiences through digital streaming services, including the platform KanPhod and other major audio platforms. The revival has sparked excitement among millennials who associate Viva’s songs with some of their fondest teenage memories.

Reflecting on the comeback, Neha Bhasin said Viva represented much more than just music. According to her, the group became an emotion and a defining symbol of an era for countless listeners. She added that the love people continue to show toward the band proves how deeply its music still resonates with fans.

Bhasin also expressed happiness that a new generation of listeners will now get the opportunity to discover the songs and videos that once shaped the soundtrack of youth culture in the early 2000s. She noted that music has the rare ability to survive across generations, keeping memories and emotions alive long after a moment has passed.

The return of Viva’s music to streaming platforms marks not just a revival of old hits, but also a celebration of a defining chapter in India’s pop music history.
