Lucknow: A grand convention and felicitation ceremony was organised on the occasion of World Veterinary Day by the Uttar Pradesh Veterinary Association at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Convention Center in Lucknow. The event brought together veterinary professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders to recognise the critical role of veterinarians in strengthening livestock health and food security.
Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Dharampal Singh, who holds the portfolios of Livestock Development and Dairy Development, attended the ceremony as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he emphasised that veterinarians are not just caregivers for animals but “true guardians of livestock, food safety, and public health.”
Theme Highlights Expanding Role of Veterinarians
Referring to this year’s global theme, “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health,” Singh said it underscores the expanding responsibilities of veterinary professionals. He noted that their role goes beyond animal treatment to ensuring safe milk production, strengthening the food chain, and safeguarding human health.
“Healthy and productive livestock are essential for increasing the income of farmers and livestock rearers, and ultimately for strengthening the state’s economy,” he said.
Backbone of Rural Economy
Highlighting the importance of animal husbandry in a large state like Uttar Pradesh, Singh said millions of families depend on livestock for their livelihoods. He urged veterinarians, para-veterinary staff, and departmental officials to work with dedication and sensitivity to ensure healthier and more productive livestock across the state.
He also directed officials to ensure effective implementation of government schemes related to animal husbandry and dairy development so that benefits reach the grassroots level. This, he said, would boost rural employment and accelerate the vision of a self-reliant Uttar Pradesh.

Recognising Contributions of Veterinary Professionals
Chairman of the State Cow Service Commission Shyam Bihari Gupta lauded veterinarians for their invaluable contribution to cattle protection, livestock development, and rural prosperity. He said their services remain a constant source of inspiration in strengthening the livestock sector.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Livestock and Dairy Development Department Mukesh Kumar Meshram congratulated the association for organising the event and stressed the need for stronger coordination between the department and veterinary professionals to enhance animal healthcare services.
Wide Participation from Veterinary Community
The event witnessed the presence of senior officials including Director (Administration and Development) Dr. Mem Pal Singh and Director (Disease Control and Field) Dr. Rajendra, along with a large number of veterinarians and dignitaries.
The programme was conducted by Dr. Sudhir Kumar, President of the Uttar Pradesh Veterinary Association, who highlighted the association’s ongoing efforts to support veterinary professionals and improve animal healthcare delivery systems.
The event not only celebrated the dedication of veterinarians but also reinforced their indispensable role in ensuring sustainable agriculture, safe food systems, and improved rural livelihoods.
