Four-Day Vocal Workshop Under Pt. Sajan Mishra Concludes at Bhatkhande Sanskriti University

Lucknow: A four-day intensive vocal music workshop conducted under the guidance of Padma Bhushan awardee Pandit Sajan Mishra concluded on a high note at Bhatkhande Sanskriti University. The workshop, organised by the university’s vocal department from April 15 to 18, was held under the chair established in the memory of Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande.

The valedictory session began with programme coordinator and Head of Department Prof Srishti Mathur felicitating Pt. Sajan Mishra. The closing ceremony was graced by Vice Chancellor Prof Mandvi Singh and renowned folk singer Malini Awasthi, along with faculty members, accompanists, research scholars, and a large number of students.

During the final day’s sessions, Pt. Mishra provided advanced training in classical ragas, guiding students through compositions in Raag Jhijhoti, including the vilambit bandish “Mahadev Maheshwar” and drut compositions such as “Roko Na Gaiyya Mohan” and “Sagun Vicharo Veer Babhna.” He also trained participants in Raag Multani, focusing on its lakshan geet and a madhya laya composition “Aangan Mein Nandlal.”

In the second session, students practised Raag Ahir Bhairav and compositions like “Albela Sajan Aayo Re,” along with Raag Vrindavani Sarang, featuring vilambit jhaptaal and drut bandishes. Bhajans such as “Chalo Man Vrindavan Ki Ore” and “Ab Kripa Karo Shri Ram” were also included, exposing students to diverse vocal styles.

Addressing the participants, Pt. Mishra emphasized that music is one of the most effective ways to attain inner peace and highlighted the importance of consistent riyaaz (practice) as the foundation of musical excellence.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Mandvi Singh noted that such workshops are being regularly organised in response to student demand and decisions of the university council, with eminent artists invited to enhance practical learning. She added that the workshop was conducted in two groups daily, benefiting around 15 students under advanced training and nearly 100 under foundational training.

The workshop concluded in a vibrant academic atmosphere, reinforcing the university’s commitment to nurturing talent and strengthening the tradition of Hindustani classical music.
