Mumbai: Megan Schutt announced her return to Australia’s one-day side in emphatic fashion, delivering a crucial early breakthrough in the opening ODI against India at Allan Border Field.
Early Blow Sets the Tone
Back in the playing XI after missing the T20I leg of the multi-format series, the 33-year-old wasted no time making her presence felt. With just her second delivery of the match, Schutt produced a sharp inswinger to trap India opener Pratika Rawal leg-before, giving Australia immediate control during the Powerplay.
Her recall came after injuries to senior all-rounder Ellyse Perry and pace option Kim Garth, which forced a reshuffle in the squad. Although initially overlooked for the ODI series, Schutt seized the opportunity created by circumstance.
Speaking after the team’s arrival in Hobart, she said it felt satisfying to return to the side and contribute with the new ball — a responsibility she views as central to her role.
Powerplay Precision and a Milestone
Schutt later explained that striking early is a key duty for opening bowlers, especially during fielding restrictions when momentum can quickly swing. Her disciplined spell of 2 for 42 from nine overs underlined both control and experience.
The outing also carried historical significance. The two wickets lifted her past Lisa Sthalekar into third place on Australia’s all-time women’s ODI wicket-takers list. She now trails only Cathryn Fitzpatrick (180 wickets) and Perry (166), further cementing her legacy in the format.

Selection Setback to Swift Redemption
Schutt’s path back into the XI was not straightforward. When selectors, including national selector Shawn Flegler, announced the ODI squad in January, she was not part of the initial lineup for the India series. Team management opted to rotate resources, preferring Darcie Brown and Garth during the T20Is to adapt to home conditions and inject extra pace.
An untimely quad injury to Garth, however, reopened the door. Schutt admitted missing out had been challenging but emphasised that clear communication from team management helped her stay focused and prepared. That readiness translated directly into impact once recalled.
Series Finely Balanced
Australia have since travelled to Hobart and are set to train at Bellerive Oval ahead of the second ODI. With the multi-format series locked at four points apiece, momentum remains delicately poised.
Schutt’s resurgence not only strengthens Australia’s bowling depth but also reinforces the value of experience in high-stakes contests. If her opening spell is any indication, she could play a decisive role as the series approaches its critical stages.
