US and Pakistan Strengthen Counterterrorism Ties

Islamabad: In a significant boost to bilateral relations, the United States has pledged full support to Pakistan in its fight against terrorism, agreeing to share intelligence, provide targeted funding, and assist in counterterrorism operations. The agreement was reached during a high-level meeting between senior officials from both nations, marking a major shift in US-Pakistan security cooperation.

Diplomatic sources in Islamabad confirmed that the US commitment includes aiding Pakistan’s efforts against groups such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). These organizations have intensified their activities in border regions, particularly near Afghanistan and Iran, posing heightened threats to Pakistan’s internal security.

Enhanced Intelligence and Border Security
Under the new framework, the US will share real-time intelligence to help Pakistan monitor and counter cross-border militant activity. This includes advanced satellite surveillance to detect human infiltration and track militant movements in high-risk areas.

Funding and Operational Support
Washington has agreed to provide specialized funding for Pakistan’s military to conduct large-scale counterterrorism operations. The move is seen as part of a broader regional stabilization effort, especially in areas where militant groups operate across both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

CIA Presence and Coalition Support Fund Revival
One of the most notable developments is the Central Intelligence Agency’s expressed interest in resuming intelligence operations within Pakistan — a move that could mark the end of years of strained cooperation on intelligence sharing. Pakistan is expected to respond to the proposal in the coming weeks.

Equally significant is the revival of the Coalition Support Fund (CSF), a US program designed to reimburse Pakistan for its counterterrorism efforts. The fund, suspended by the Trump administration in 2018, will now be reinstated, signalling renewed trust and deeper collaboration.

Regional Stability and Afghanistan
Both sides discussed the establishment of an economic corridor linking Pakistan to Kabul as part of a regional stability initiative. This project, aimed at fostering trade and reconstruction in Afghanistan, had previously stalled but now has renewed backing from both governments.

Retrieval of US Military Equipment
The US has also requested Pakistan’s assistance in recovering military equipment left behind during the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. This move underscores growing operational trust between the two countries.

The talks concluded with an agreement to hold the next round of counterterrorism discussions in Washington next year, as both nations reaffirmed their commitment to long-term strategic cooperation in security, intelligence, and regional stability.
