Lord Buddha Statue in Shravasti’s Mahamangol Buddha Vihar to illuminate with Rs 80 lakh Facade Lighting

Committed to developing Shravasti as a major Buddhist pilgrimage and tourism destination – Jaiveer Singh

Lucknow: The iconic statue of Lord Buddha at the Mahamangol Buddha Vihar complex in Shravasti will soon be illuminated with state-of-the-art facade lighting. The Uttar Pradesh government has approved Rs 80 lakh for the project, aiming to enhance the visual appeal of this sacred site at night. This lighting initiative will significantly elevate the site’s grandeur, creating a striking nighttime experience for visitors and pilgrims alike.

Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh announced the development, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to positioning Shravasti as a major Buddhist pilgrimage and tourism destination. “Shravasti is a historically rich city, with deep roots in Sanatan, Buddhist, and Jain traditions. Every year, thousands of visitors, including international Buddhist followers, come here. By improving infrastructure and aesthetics, we aim to offer them a more fulfilling experience,” he said.

Surrounded by lakes, rivers, hills, and forests, Shravasti holds spiritual and historical significance. It is one of the key places where Lord Buddha spent the most monsoon retreats. The new 360-degree lighting system will ensure the statue and surrounding complex remain visible and majestic from all angles, even after dark. On special occasions and festivals, the site will feature multi-layered, theme-based lighting displays.

According to tourism department data, Shravasti welcomed 1,27,222 visitors in 2024, including 1,20,540 domestic and 6,682 international tourists. With the planned upgrades, the department expects a positive rise in tourist inflow. Visitors to Shravasti often explore sacred sites such as Jetavana Monastery, Angulimala’s Cave, and the Anand Bodhi Tree, all closely associated with Lord Buddha’s life and teachings.

“The Uttar Pradesh government is fully committed to developing Shravasti into a world-renowned Buddhist pilgrimage and tourism centre point. The facade lighting project is part of a broader mission to give Shravasti the global recognition it deserves. This initiative will not only draw pilgrims and tourists but also stimulate local economic growth by creating new opportunities for employment and business.”
