Chandigarh / Lucknow— Uttar Pradesh is undertaking a massive, war-footing upgrade of overloaded transformers across the state to meet surging electricity demands and ensure uninterrupted, quality power supply to consumers, said AK Sharma, UP’s Minister for Energy and Urban Development, during the Northern Regional Power Ministers’ Conference held in Chandigarh.
The conference, convened by the Union Ministry of Power, was chaired by Union Minister for Power, Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar, and attended by power ministers and senior officials from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
UP Boosting Infrastructure for Reliable Power Supply
Addressing the gathering, Minister AK Sharma detailed the comprehensive infrastructure revamp currently underway in UP’s power sector. “We are replacing worn-out wires and electric poles and installing new transformers. The capacity enhancement of overloaded transformers is being carried out on a war footing,” Sharma emphasized.

He noted that in the past eight years, the state’s energy generation capacity has increased from 15,000 MW to 25,000 MW, marking a significant jump. Similarly, the substation capacity, which was 39,159 MVA in March 2017, has risen dramatically to 1,99,500 MVA. Transmission line capacity also grew from 7,502 circuit km in 2017 to a robust 62,483 circuit km as of now.
Leading in Power Supply Nationwide
AK Sharma highlighted that UP has become a national leader in power supply over the past four years. In 2022, the state delivered a record 26,589 MW, followed by 28,284 MW in 2023 and 30,618 MW in 2024. For 2025, officials project that power demand could peak at 32,500 MW between July and September.
Growing Generation and Storage Capacity
The Minister stated that UP’s total current power generation capacity stands at 8,500 MW, a substantial rise from 5,100 MW in 2017 and 5,800 MW in 2022. This growth is complemented by transformer station capacity, which has seen a fivefold increase since 2017 and a 1.5x rise since 2022, now reaching 200,000 MVA.
Green Energy Initiatives Underway
In a forward-looking move, the state is pushing the envelope on green energy integration. Under the Green Energy Corridor-2 project, UP is building infrastructure to accommodate 4 GW of green transmission capacity. The state’s existing transmission framework includes 698 substations, 1,99,347 MVA of transmission capacity, and 58,672 circuit kilometers of transmission lines.
Ongoing expansion includes 118 new substations, an additional 74,195 MVA in transmission capacity, and 13,228 circuit km of new lines under construction.
Meeting the Future with Confidence
UP’s comprehensive energy strategy aims to not only meet its own growing consumption but also contribute significantly to the national grid. With robust planning, record investments, and aggressive implementation, the state is positioning itself as a power surplus region with modern, efficient, and green infrastructure.
As the demand curve rises and summer intensifies, UP’s proactive stance, bolstered by technology and long-term planning, promises to keep the lights on—reliably, sustainably, and across every corner of the state.
