UP Cabinet Approves ₹855 Crore Expansion of Lohia Institute in Lucknow

Lucknow: In a major boost to healthcare infrastructure in Lucknow, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has approved a massive expansion project for Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, including the construction of a 1,010-bed state-of-the-art multi-speciality emergency centre, a new OPD block, and an advanced teaching facility.

The proposal received clearance during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The state government has sanctioned ₹855.04 crore for the ambitious healthcare project aimed at strengthening emergency medical services and medical education in the state.

The new facilities will be developed at the institute’s campus located in Gomti Nagar Extension Sector-7 near Shaheed Path.

Announcing the decision, Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said the project would significantly enhance healthcare accessibility and improve treatment facilities for patients coming from across Uttar Pradesh.

According to officials, the proposed multi-speciality emergency centre will have 1,010 beds equipped with modern medical technology and specialized treatment facilities. The expansion is expected to improve emergency response capabilities and reduce pressure on existing government hospitals in the capital city.

A new Outpatient Department (OPD) block will also be constructed to manage the growing number of patients visiting the institute daily. Authorities said the upgraded infrastructure would help streamline patient care and provide more organized and efficient medical services.

The project additionally includes the construction of a modern teaching block with a seating capacity of 200 students. Officials stated that the new academic facility would provide medical students with access to advanced learning resources, modern laboratories, and improved teaching infrastructure.

The government believes the expansion will not only strengthen tertiary healthcare services but also improve the quality of medical education and training in the state.

Officials said the new infrastructure would enable faster and specialized treatment for critically ill patients, particularly those referred from districts across Uttar Pradesh. The upgraded facilities are also expected to reduce the patient burden on other major hospitals in Lucknow.

The expansion of the Lohia Institute is being seen as part of the Uttar Pradesh government’s broader push to modernize healthcare infrastructure, increase medical capacity, and improve access to quality treatment and medical education across the state.
