UP 2027 Battle: SP’s 2024 Gains vs Yogi Government’s Governance Record

Lucknow: With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, the political contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) is increasingly centred on governance, social alliances and the ability to convert public support into electoral gains.

The BJP, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is expected to highlight its governance record, development projects and welfare schemes, while the SP under Akhilesh Yadav is seeking to build on its performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The contrasting approaches have brought the state’s political equations into focus ahead of the next Assembly polls.

2022 Assembly Results and 2024 Lok Sabha Shift

Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly constituencies, with 202 seats required for a majority. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP won 255 seats, while the SP secured 111. The BJP-led NDA won 273 seats, compared with 125 for the SP-led alliance.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections produced a different political picture. The SP won 37 of the state’s 80 parliamentary seats, emerging as the largest party from Uttar Pradesh. The BJP won 33 seats. The SP recorded 33.59% of the vote, while the BJP secured 41.37%, according to election results.

The difference between the two elections has become an important part of the political debate. The BJP faces the task of explaining its parliamentary setback and consolidating its Assembly support, while the SP is seeking to translate its Lok Sabha performance into a broader state-level political base.

BJP’s Governance and Development Narrative

The BJP’s expected campaign focus includes law and order, action against organised crime, women’s safety, electricity supply, welfare schemes and infrastructure development.

The party is likely to compare the governance record of the Yogi Adityanath government with the previous SP administration. Expressways, airports, industrial projects, investment initiatives and the One District One Product programme are among the areas that could feature in its development narrative.

However, the political debate is also likely to focus on the difference between government announcements and their impact on people’s lives. Employment opportunities, farmers’ incomes, inflation, business conditions and access to public services are expected to remain important issues.

The BJP’s challenge will be to demonstrate how its governance and development claims have translated into outcomes experienced by voters.

SP Seeks to Expand PDA Social Coalition

For the SP, the 2024 Lok Sabha election result has strengthened the importance of its PDA framework, referring to Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak communities.

The party is expected to emphasise social justice, constitutional safeguards, reservation and political representation. It will also face the task of expanding its support beyond its traditional voter base and building a wider coalition among backward classes, Dalits and minority communities.

The sustainability of the 2024 social alignment will be a key issue in the run-up to the Assembly elections. Candidate selection, organisational representation and the party’s ability to maintain support across different social groups will be important factors in its campaign.

The BJP, meanwhile, is expected to focus on its support among various caste groups, women and beneficiaries of government welfare programmes.

Employment, Welfare and Representation in Focus

The 2027 contest is likely to involve questions about employment, welfare delivery, social representation, law and order and development.

For the BJP, the challenge includes maintaining public confidence in its governance record while addressing concerns over jobs, prices and social representation. For the SP, the challenge is to present a detailed policy alternative covering employment, investment, agriculture, welfare and public safety.

The political debate is therefore expected to extend beyond campaign slogans to questions about policy priorities and their implementation.

A Contest Shaped by Two Political Approaches

The BJP’s political messaging is expected to combine governance, development, welfare and Hindutva, its ideological foundation. The SP is expected to place greater emphasis on social justice, the PDA framework and representation.

The 2022 Assembly election provides a reference point for the BJP’s state-level support, while the 2024 Lok Sabha results have given the SP a stronger parliamentary position in Uttar Pradesh.

The next Assembly election will provide an opportunity for voters to assess the competing parties’ records, policies and campaign commitments. The extent to which the BJP and SP can build broad social support and present credible plans for the state will remain central to the political discussion ahead of 2027.
