Indian Coast Guard Commissions Indigenous Fast Patrol Vessel ICGS Akshay in Goa

New Delhi/Goa: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has commissioned ICGS Akshay, a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Vasco, Goa, marking another significant milestone in India’s maritime security and indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

ICGS Akshay is the fifth Fast Patrol Vessel in its class and the first of eight such vessels being constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited. The vessel has been designed and built entirely in India under the Government of India’s flagship Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior Indian Coast Guard officials, government dignitaries, representatives of Goa Shipyard Limited, and other distinguished guests.

Named “Akshay,” meaning indestructible, the vessel symbolizes the Indian Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime interests and ensuring safe, secure, and clean seas.

The advanced patrol vessel is equipped to undertake a wide range of operational tasks, including maritime law enforcement, coastal security, search and rescue missions, marine environmental protection, and assistance to vessels and mariners in distress. Its induction is expected to significantly enhance the Coast Guard’s operational capabilities along India’s extensive coastline and maritime zones.

The vessel will be commanded by Commandant (Junior Grade) Deepak Choubey, who will oversee its deployment and operational responsibilities.

Speaking on the occasion, officials highlighted that the commissioning of ICGS Akshay forms part of the Indian Coast Guard’s ongoing fleet modernization programme aimed at strengthening maritime safety, coastal surveillance, national security, and environmental protection.

Among the dignitaries present were Parama Sen, Additional Secretary (Personnel), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance; Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, Commander, Indian Coast Guard Region (West); Inspector General Jyotindra Singh, Deputy Director General (HRD), along with senior Central and State Government officials and representatives of Goa Shipyard Limited.

The induction of ICGS Akshay underscores India’s growing capability in indigenous defence production while further enhancing the Indian Coast Guard’s readiness to address evolving maritime challenges in the region.
