Ghazipur Police Arrest Chain Snatching Accused, Recover Stolen Chain and Motorcycle

Lucknow: The Ghazipur Police have arrested an alleged chain snatcher and recovered a stolen gold-coloured chain along with the motorcycle used in the commission of the crime. Police said the accused, along with an accomplice, had allegedly snatched the chain of a woman while she was out for a walk with her children in the Indiranagar area.

According to police officials, Meenakshi Srivastava, a resident of Indiranagar, lodged a complaint on June 20 stating that two unidentified motorcycle-borne individuals had snatched the chain from her neck and fled from the spot. Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Ghazipur Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and efforts were launched to identify and apprehend the accused.

Arrest Following Tip-Off

On June 26, a Ghazipur Police team conducting routine checking at Polytechnic Crossing received information from an informer that one of the individuals involved in the chain-snatching incident was present near the Pink Booth on Faizabad Road along with the motorcycle used in the offence.

Acting on the tip-off, the police reached the location and noticed a suspicious individual standing beside a motorcycle. When the suspect spotted the police team, he allegedly attempted to flee but was swiftly surrounded and apprehended.

The arrested individual was identified as Rohan Khan (23), son of Salim Khan, originally a resident of Ahmadpur Dev Gali in Barabanki district and currently residing in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Somnath Dwar area under Cantonment Police Station limits in Lucknow.

During the search, police recovered a yellow-metal neck chain believed to be the stolen property.

Confession and Investigation

During questioning, the accused allegedly admitted that he and his associate, identified as Mahendra Kumar, had carried out the chain-snatching incident near Mansarovar Crossing on the evening of June 19. According to police, Mahendra Kumar was riding pillion on the motorcycle when they allegedly targeted a woman walking with her two children and snatched her chain before escaping.

The accused reportedly told investigators that the stolen chain could not be sold after the incident and therefore remained in his possession.

Following the recovery, additional legal provisions were added to the case. Police said efforts are underway to arrest the co-accused, Mahendra Kumar, and further investigation is continuing.

Recovery

Police recovered the following items from the accused:

  • One yellow-metal neck chain allegedly stolen during the incident.
  • One black-and-yellow Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle (Registration No. UP34AZ3217) allegedly used in the crime.

Criminal History

Police records indicate that the accused has previously been named in several criminal cases registered in Lucknow, Barabanki and Uttarakhand, including cases involving theft, cheating and other offences. Authorities are verifying his complete criminal history with other police stations and districts.

Police officials stated that legal proceedings are underway and efforts are being intensified to apprehend the remaining accused involved in the case.
