Finch Predicts Tough Call: Webster to Debut, Marsh to Miss Out?

Sydney – Aaron Finch, former Australian white-ball captain, has raised questions about Mitchell Marsh’s inclusion in the starting eleven for the final Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Speaking on ESPN’s Around the Wicket, Finch endorsed Beau Webster, an uncapped player, as a potential replacement for Marsh, who has struggled to make an impact with both bat and ball in the series.

Marsh’s Lackluster Performance

Marsh has had a dismal run in the series, scoring only 73 runs at an average of 10.42, with a top score of 47 in Perth’s second innings. As a bowler, he has delivered just 33 overs, claiming three wickets. Finch pointed out that Marsh’s performance has fallen short, particularly at the pivotal number six position, where impactful contributions are crucial.

“Merely producing runs with an average of 10 is insufficient,” Finch remarked. “Given the number of overs he is now bowling, I believe you would have to argue that he wouldn’t be [included].”

Finch’s sentiment was echoed by Callum Ferguson, a former Australian cricketer. “The bowlers have shared a significant burden throughout the series, especially after losing Josh Hazlewood early in a match. Heading into this Test, the fast-bowling unit needs additional support,” Ferguson said.

The Case for Webster

Webster, yet to debut in Test cricket, offers fresh energy and versatility. Finch believes his inclusion could provide the depth needed for a high-stakes match. “I think Beau Webster will come in,” Finch predicted, noting that Webster’s all-round abilities might align better with the team’s requirements.

Concerns Over Mitchell Starc

Mitchell Starc’s fitness is another talking point heading into the final Test. Starc appeared in discomfort during the closing stages of Australia’s fourth-Test victory in Melbourne, where the team secured a 2-1 series lead with a commanding 184-run win. Despite concerns, Finch was optimistic about Starc’s availability.

“He seemed to be in terrible discomfort, but considering his effort in the fourth Test, he would have survived on adrenaline,” Finch said. “I believe he will undoubtedly play.”

Ferguson urged caution, highlighting the importance of managing Starc’s workload. “We also have an upcoming series in Sri Lanka. While this Test match is crucial, careful handling of players’ fitness is essential,” he said.

Tactical Adjustments for Sydney

Finch and Ferguson agreed that Nathan Lyon and part-time spinner Travis Head may take on more bowling responsibilities in Sydney. However, Finch expressed concern over Marsh’s limited bowling workload, which could strain the attack if a bowler is injured during the match.

“You can’t bowl in just a couple of overs if someone goes down,” Finch said.

Australia’s selectors face a critical decision ahead of the final Test, balancing the need for immediate results with long-term planning for the series against Sri Lanka. While Marsh’s position appears precarious, the inclusion of Beau Webster could mark a turning point as Australia aims to clinch the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The final Test begins on January 4 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, promising another chapter of intense competition between two cricketing giants.
