New Delhi – The Ekamra Sports Literature Festival hosted a captivating session with Kit Holden, journalist and author of Played in Germany. In an engaging conversation, Holden delved into the nuances of German football culture, club dynamics, and the deep emotional ties fans maintain with their teams.
Holden began by addressing the unique fan culture in Germany, noting its vibrancy and resilience. “Many German fans hold strong opinions about clubs like Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig,” he said. “While Bayern dominates, Leipzig’s corporate-backed rise has alienated traditionalists.” He emphasized the deep-rooted loyalty among fans, highlighting clubs like Schalke 04, whose supporters pack their 60,000-seat stadium despite the team struggling in the second division.
Cologne (Köln) emerged as a focal point in the discussion. Holden described the city as a “one-club town,” likening it to Newcastle in England. “Cologne is culturally significant, with its unique dialect and carnival traditions influencing the local football scene. Fans sing in their dialect during matches, keeping linguistic heritage alive,” he explained.
The conversation also touched on Germany’s national team and its recent struggles. Holden praised Julian Nagelsmann for reviving support for the team ahead of the Euros hosted by Germany. “Nagelsmann’s focus on creating a positive vibe and connecting with fans brought back enthusiasm. The team shifted from being a symbol of frustration to one of hope and unity,” he remarked.
When asked about Jürgen Klopp’s association with Red Bull as head of global soccer, Holden reflected on fan sentiments. “For many, Klopp represents the romanticism of football, which clashes with Red Bull’s corporate ethos. It’s a fascinating dichotomy,” he observed.
The session concluded with Holden emphasizing the universal appeal of football. “German football is more than just the game. It’s about identity, history, and the joy of being part of a community, win or lose,” he said, leaving the audience inspired by the depth of the sport’s cultural impact.
The Ekamra Sports Literature Festival continues to offer thought-provoking discussions each year, celebrating the intersection of sports and storytelling.
