London: The British High Commission is providing Indian women between the ages of 18 and 23 with the chance to spend a day in the shoes of one of the country’s most senior diplomats in honor of October 11, International Day of the Girl Child.

The biennial ‘High Commissioner for a Day’ competition, which was launched  by the British High Commission in New Delhi, encourages outstanding young Indian women to showcase their abilities and leadership on a global platform.

Videos should be posted with the hashtag ‘#DayOfTheGirl’ and tagged ‘@UKinIndia’ on social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. September 4, 2024, is the deadline for submissions. In order to complete their entry, applicants must also fill out an online form.

“The historic UK-India Technology Security Initiative agreed between our countries sets out a bold new approach for how we will work together on the defining technologies of this decade,” said British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron.

“The UK is setting the standard for the responsible and safe development of artificial intelligence (AI), having discovered graphene first and designing the semiconductor chip that powers every smartphone. India’s technological advancements are also transforming the globe; from its groundbreaking moon expedition to the way it has revolutionized mobile banking systems. I have no doubt that when we pool our brightest ideas, we can achieve really amazing things “added the speaker.

The competition for High Commissioner for a Day is a fantastic chance to develop the next generation of female leaders and learn about the changes they envision for the world. In the announcement, she added, “This is a cause that lies very close to my heart as the first female British High Commissioner to India. I encourage every young woman to put on their thinking cap and send in their best ideas.”

In observance of the International Day of the Girl Child (October 11), the British High Commission has been hosting the ‘High Commissioner for a Day’ competition every year since 2017. For the UK, improving the lives of women and girls is a top priority on a worldwide scale. Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is sponsoring this year’s tournament.

The champion from the previous year, Shreya Dharmarajan from Chennai, took part in a range of diplomatic events. She chaired talks on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the UN office in New Delhi, discussed UK-India research collaboration with India’s Principal Scientific Adviser, Professor Ajay Sood, and launched a report on electric vehicle charging infrastructure with the Delhi Transport Department as part of the Accelerating Smart Power and Renewable Energy in India (ASPIRE) program.

The Technology Security Initiative was introduced in July 2024 in New Delhi by the UK and India during the visit of Foreign Secretary David Lammy. The collaborative approach indicated in the UK-India Roadmap 2030 is strengthened by this project, which focuses on emerging and important technologies in key areas. The event known as “High Commissioner for a Day” will take place in person in Delhi.
