New Delhi: Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned nearly two years before the completion of his five-year term, marking a significant political development in the country. His resignation comes amid mounting political pressure and controversy surrounding reports of alleged contact with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in exile in India since August 2024.
According to reports, the 76-year-old cited health concerns as the primary reason for stepping down. A spokesperson for the presidential office confirmed that Shahabuddin’s resignation letter had been sent to Parliament. Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed will serve as Acting President until a new head of state is elected.
Shahabuddin, a former judge and a veteran of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War, assumed office in April 2023 after being elected by the then Parliament during the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina. He remained in office even after the dramatic political upheaval of July-August 2024, when mass student-led protests resulted in the collapse of Hasina’s government.
Political scrutiny intensified earlier this year following reports that Shahabuddin had attempted to contact Sheikh Hasina during a medical visit to London. The alleged communication sparked criticism within Bangladesh’s current political establishment, led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which has maintained a long-standing rivalry with Hasina and her Awami League.
The issue reportedly increased pressure on the President, with local media suggesting he had indicated his intention to resign during a meeting shortly before his formal announcement. Calls for his removal had also surfaced following the 2024 political transition, although the interim administration retained him in office, citing constitutional considerations.
Following the BNP’s victory in the parliamentary elections held on February 12 and the formation of a new government, speculation over a possible change in the presidency resurfaced. While party leaders initially dismissed such discussions because of the remaining tenure, Shahabuddin’s resignation has now paved the way for the election of a new President.
The development marks another important chapter in Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape as the country continues to navigate the aftermath of last year’s political crisis.
