Melbourne: Former Australia batter Mike Hussey has taken up a new role with Cricket Australia, joining the national team’s support staff for four major international assignments, including the Ashes, the ODI World Cup, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028.
Hussey will serve as a consultant coach for the Ashes campaign and the next ODI World Cup. He will take on an advisory role for the Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup.
The appointment comes after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) parted ways with Hussey ahead of the IPL 2027 season. He had been associated with the franchise since 2018, serving as its batting coach for around eight years.
CSK Stint Ends After Eight Years
Hussey’s departure was part of changes to CSK’s coaching setup ahead of the next IPL season. Reports had earlier linked him with a possible role in the England setup, particularly given his association with former CSK head coach Stephen Fleming. He has instead joined Australia’s national coaching structure.
His experience in franchise cricket and T20 coaching is expected to support Australia’s preparations for upcoming limited-overs tournaments.
First Assignment Against England
Hussey’s first engagement is scheduled to begin later this month, when Australia hosts England for a T20 International series. The teams will also face each other in an ODI series.
He is expected to contribute to the team’s preparations during this period, including its planning for the subsequent Test series against New Zealand.
Cricket Australia’s areas of focus for his T20 responsibilities include campaign planning, opposition analysis, player scouting and performance assessment. These tasks will help the coaching group evaluate players and prepare strategies for different match conditions.

Focus on Major International Tournaments
Hussey’s four assignments cover key events across different formats. His consultant coaching responsibilities for the Ashes and the ODI World Cup will involve supporting preparations for major international campaigns.
His advisory role for the Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup will focus on Australia’s plans for the shortest format. T20 cricket will feature at the 2028 Olympics, adding another major competition to the team’s schedule.
Australia also faces a demanding Test calendar, with several matches expected in the coming period. Managing commitments across formats will require careful planning from the coaching staff.
Hussey Welcomes National Team Role
Hussey has welcomed the opportunity to contribute to Australian cricket. In a statement released by Cricket Australia, he said he was excited to work with a team that had already enjoyed considerable success.
He added that he hoped to make a positive contribution to both the coaching group and the players during the upcoming international campaigns.
The appointment marks Hussey’s move from a long-term franchise coaching role to a wider assignment with his national team, where he will draw on his playing and coaching experience across formats.
