Mumbai: Astrologer Gauri Jain brings a rather unique lens to the social media debate, reading our obsession with sharing and scrolling through the language of planets. She explained why she believes awareness and discretion matter more than choosing a side.
She said, “As an astrologer, I am neither completely in favour of nor against sharing our lives on social media. I believe the key is awareness, discretion and balance.”
“Astrology itself gives us a beautiful framework to understand this. Mercury represents communication, information and social networking, while Rahu represents the digital world, mass visibility, fascination and the desire to be seen,” she added.
She went on to explain how these planetary energies play out when they tip into excess. She said, “When these energies become excessive, we may feel compelled to constantly share, update and seek validation from the outside world.”
“The Moon represents our emotional and private world, and Venus represents relationships, beauty and personal pleasures, things that do not necessarily need public approval. Saturn, on the other hand, teaches boundaries, responsibility and restraint,” she added.
Gauri’s advice, ultimately, comes down to using the platform with intention rather than compulsion. She said, “Therefore, I believe social media should be used consciously: share your knowledge, creativity, professional work and meaningful experiences, but you don’t have to put every relationship, achievement, emotion or personal moment on display. Not every blessing needs an audience.”
“Sometimes, protecting your privacy is also a form of protecting your energy. In astrology, Rahu may want the world to see everything, but Saturn reminds us that wisdom lies in knowing what to reveal, what to hold back, and when to remain silent,” she added. Turning to the habit of endless scrolling, she pointed to Rahu as the force behind our restlessness. She said, “From an astrological perspective, I feel Rahu beautifully represents the way social media has begun controlling our attention. Rahu is the planet of illusion, obsession, endless desire and fascination with what is new, unusual and instantly gratifying.”
“Social media constantly feeds this Rahu energy, one reel leads to another, one notification creates a desire to check another, and before we realise it, hours have passed,” she added.
She believes the habit often takes over before we even notice it happening. She said, “We often convince ourselves that we are scrolling for work, information or everyday responsibilities, but somewhere the habit starts controlling us rather than us controlling the habit. Mercury adds the constant flow of information and communication, while the Moon becomes restless with continuous stimulation. This is where Saturn becomes important, it represents discipline, boundaries and the ability to say, ‘Enough.’” “Social media itself is not the problem, the problem begins when Rahu takes control of our attention, Mercury keeps the mind constantly busy, and we lose the Saturnian discipline to switch off,” Gauri ended.
