Uttar Pradesh Keeps Power Tariffs Unchanged for Seventh Consecutive Year, Says Energy Minister A.K. Sharma

Lucknow: In a major relief for millions of electricity consumers across Uttar Pradesh, the state government has decided not to increase power tariffs for the financial year 2026-27, marking the seventh consecutive year of stable electricity rates. Announcing the development, Uttar Pradesh Urban Development and Energy Minister A.K. Sharma described the decision as a reflection of the government’s consumer-friendly policies and commitment to affordable power.

Reacting to the tariff order issued by the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission, Sharma said the achievement was made possible through efficient financial management, regulatory discipline, and reforms in the power sector. He credited the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the governance model of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s energy infrastructure and ensuring reliable electricity supply.

The minister highlighted that the state government has increased tariff subsidies to ₹20,400 crore for 2026-27, up from ₹17,100 crore in the previous fiscal year. The subsidy will continue to benefit lifeline consumers, economically weaker households in rural and urban areas, private tubewell operators, and rural metered consumers.

Despite a regulatory gap of nearly ₹2,580 crore, UPERC decided against any tariff hike, citing the availability of regulatory surplus and improved financial performance of the state’s power distribution companies. Sharma said this demonstrates the success of the government’s reforms and fiscal prudence.

The minister also emphasized the state’s commitment to green energy and electric mobility. Existing green energy tariffs have been retained, while incentives for battery-swapping stations and Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) providers have been continued. Additionally, EV charging during solar hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) will attract a 20 percent lower tariff, encouraging cleaner energy adoption.

Sharma noted that Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a national model in the power sector through record electricity supply, expansion of transmission and distribution networks, reduction in line losses, and improved consumer services. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting consumer interests, enhancing energy security, expanding renewable energy, and building a modern, reliable, and affordable power system in line with the vision of a developed India and a developed Uttar Pradesh.
