India Eye Strong Start to Women’s T20 World Cup Campaign Against Pakistan

Abhishek Nayar Backs Team India to Secure Semi-Final Spot Early

Birmingham: Defending champions India begin their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a high-profile clash against Pakistan in Birmingham, carrying both confidence and expectations as one of the tournament favourites.

Former India cricketer and JioStar expert Abhishek Nayar believes the Indian team should focus on dominating the group stage and securing qualification for the semi-finals well before their crucial encounter against Australia.

According to Nayar, England’s unpredictable weather could play a significant role in determining the final standings, making net run rate an important factor throughout the tournament.

“Rain interruptions are always a possibility in England, so India cannot simply focus on winning matches. They need convincing victories. Large winning margins can become crucial if qualification comes down to net run rate,” he said.

Nayar emphasized that India should aim to build momentum early and avoid entering the latter stages of the group phase under pressure.

“The ideal scenario is to approach the final group matches against Bangladesh and Australia with qualification virtually secured. That would allow the team to play with greater freedom and confidence,” he added.

Bowlers and Powerplay Specialists Hold the Key

Looking ahead to India’s campaign, Nayar identified fast bowler Kranti Goud, spinner Shree Charani and explosive opener Shafali Verma as three players who could have a major influence on the team’s fortunes.

Kranti Goud’s ability to exploit England’s seam-friendly conditions with the new ball could provide India with crucial breakthroughs during the powerplay, while Shree Charani’s knack for controlling the middle overs and picking up wickets makes her a vital component of the bowling attack.

On the batting front, Nayar highlighted Shafali Verma’s aggressive approach as a key factor in giving India fast starts.

“Shafali’s role is to put pressure on the opposition from the outset. If she can capitalize on the powerplay, it allows Smriti Mandhana to settle in and play her natural game, which can be devastating for opponents,” he observed.

India Equipped to Handle Favourites Tag

While India enter the tournament carrying the weight of expectations following their recent success on the global stage, Nayar believes the current squad is better prepared than ever to embrace that pressure.

He pointed out that the experience gained through international tournaments and the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has helped develop a confident and mentally strong group capable of thriving in high-pressure situations.

“India have the depth, talent and experience to justify their status as favourites. The players now understand how to handle expectations and perform on the big stage,” Nayar said.

He also noted that India’s opening opponents, Pakistan, face a different kind of pressure as underdogs seeking a breakthrough result against a stronger and more balanced side.

Smriti Mandhana Remains India’s Biggest Match-Winner

Among India’s star performers, Nayar singled out vice-captain Smriti Mandhana as the player most capable of shaping the tournament.

He described Mandhana as one of the most complete batters in women’s cricket, capable of scoring in all areas of the ground and adapting her game to different match situations.

“Opposition teams know that dismissing Smriti early is often their best chance of stopping India. Once she settles in, she becomes extremely difficult to contain because of her shot range, game awareness and ability to manipulate the field,” Nayar explained.

Her versatility against both pace and spin, combined with her ability to rotate strike and accelerate when required, makes her one of the most dangerous batters in the competition.

As India embark on their quest for back-to-back ICC titles, a strong start against Pakistan could set the tone for another memorable World Cup campaign. With a balanced squad, experienced leaders and several match-winners in their ranks, India will be aiming to establish early dominance and reinforce their status as one of the favourites for the trophy
