Asthma Patients Advised to Avoid Thresher Dust, Says KGMU Expert on World Asthma Day

Lucknow: Farmers suffering from asthma should avoid exposure to dust generated during harvesting activities, especially from threshers, warned senior respiratory expert Dr. Suryakant on the occasion of World Asthma Day.

Speaking from the Department of Respiratory Medicine at King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, Dr. Suryakant highlighted that the day is observed every year on the first Tuesday of May to raise awareness about asthma and its management worldwide. This year’s theme emphasises the urgent need for access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for all patients.

Rising Risk During Harvest Season

Dr. Suryakant noted that changing weather conditions, fluctuations in temperature, and an increase in pollen levels often worsen asthma symptoms. In rural areas, the widespread use of threshers during wheat harvesting releases large amounts of dust and husk into the air, which can aggravate respiratory conditions.

“This dust can cause inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to breathlessness. Asthma and allergy patients should avoid fields during such activities and protect themselves from exposure,” he said.

Common Triggers and Precautions

Asthma, a chronic and often genetic condition, is triggered by factors such as dust, smoke, humidity, infections, stress, smoking, strong fragrances, and pet dander. The expert advised people to:

  • Avoid dusty environments and thresher operations
  • Keep homes clean, well-ventilated, and free from dust accumulation
  • Stay away from smoking and strong perfumes
  • Limit exposure to furry clothing and objects that collect dust

He also recommended starting preventive care 4–6 weeks before seasonal changes, including regular medication and consultation with specialists.

Importance of Correct Inhaler Use

Dr. Suryakant stressed that asthma patients typically use two types of inhalers:

  • Reliever inhalers, which reduce airway constriction
  • Controller (anti-inflammatory) inhalers, which reduce inflammation

He cautioned that many patients in India rely excessively on reliever inhalers while neglecting controller inhalers, increasing the risk of severe asthma attacks.

“Inflammation occurs before airway constriction. Regular use of anti-inflammatory inhalers can significantly reduce the chances of asthma attacks,” he explained.

Managing Asthma Effectively

The expert emphasised that asthma can be effectively controlled with proper treatment and precautions. He advised patients to:

  • Take medications regularly as prescribed
  • Avoid allergens and environmental triggers
  • Seek immediate medical help if symptoms worsen
  • Practise breathing exercises like pranayama to strengthen lung function

Spreading Awareness

The observance of World Asthma Day, supported by global health initiatives, aims to educate people about managing the condition and improving access to essential treatments.

With rising environmental challenges and seasonal triggers, doctors stress that awareness, timely intervention, and preventive care remain key to reducing the burden of asthma, particularly among vulnerable groups such as farmers and rural populations.
