Lucknow: The third day of an ongoing four-day vocal music workshop, being conducted under the guidance of Padma Bhushan awardee Pandit Sajan Mishra, concluded in an inspiring and enriching atmosphere at Bhatkhande Sanskriti University.
Organised by the university’s vocal department under a chair established in memory of Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, the workshop is being held from April 15 to 18, 2026, at the university’s Sujan Auditorium. The initiative aims to provide students with advanced training in Hindustani classical music under the mentorship of an eminent maestro.
The third day commenced with programme coordinator and Head of the Vocal Department Prof Srishti Mathur felicitating Pt. Sajan Mishra. Faculty members, accompanists, research scholars, and a large number of students were present during the sessions.
In the first session, Pt. Mishra offered detailed practical training, guiding students through riyaaz in Raag Todi and Raag Ahir Bhairav. Through compositions such as “Dadhi Bechan” and “Albela Sajan,” he explained the finer nuances of classical गायन, focusing on technique, expression, and tonal precision.
The second session featured practice in vilambit and madhya laya, where students were trained in a chhota khayal composition “Pyare Kanhai Na Maro Kankariya.” He also introduced a tarana—“Odar Tana Dere Nata Deem Deem Tanana”—to familiarise participants with diverse vocal styles and rhythmic patterns.

Vice Chancellor Prof Mandvi Singh highlighted that such workshops are being organised regularly in response to student demand and decisions of the university council, with renowned artists invited to enrich practical learning. She noted that the training is conducted in two groups daily, benefiting around 15 students in advanced sessions and nearly 100 in foundational learning.
Registrar Dr Srishti Dhawan stated that such initiatives play a crucial role in skill development while preserving and promoting India’s rich musical heritage.
The workshop continues to provide a valuable platform for students to deepen their understanding of classical music, combining traditional knowledge with hands-on training under expert guidance.
