Pakistan’s Role in Ceasefire Faces Scrutiny Amid US-Iran Truce

Islamabad: The recently agreed two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran has raised cautious hopes for long-term peace in the region. However, Pakistan’s claimed role as a mediator in facilitating the truce has come under increasing scrutiny.

While Islamabad is reportedly seeking credit for helping broker the temporary ceasefire, analysts have questioned the extent and intent of its involvement.

Experts Question Pakistan’s Mediation Claims

Jonathan Schanzer, a former U.S. Treasury terrorism analyst associated with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, has raised concerns over Pakistan’s geopolitical positioning.

He pointed out that Pakistan remains heavily indebted to China, particularly under initiatives like the Belt and Road framework, which could influence its foreign policy decisions.

Schanzer questioned whether Pakistan is genuinely attempting to strengthen ties with the United States or acting in alignment with Chinese strategic interests. “It remains unclear whether Pakistan is seeking to expand its alliances with Washington or operating under Beijing’s influence,” he noted.

Concerns Over Strategic Alignment

Highlighting the complexity of Pakistan’s diplomatic stance, Schanzer suggested that its deep financial and strategic links with China raise doubts about its neutrality in international mediation efforts.

He also described Pakistan’s assertion of playing a role in discussions involving the White House as “unusual,” adding that the specifics of its involvement—and what it might expect in return—remain unclear.

Ceasefire a Temporary Relief

Despite the ceasefire agreement and the reported reopening of key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, analysts warn that the broader conflict remains far from resolved.

Schanzer cautioned that while the truce offers a temporary pause in hostilities, the underlying tensions between the United States and Iran persist, leaving the region in a fragile state.

The coming weeks are expected to be critical in determining whether the ceasefire can evolve into a more durable peace framework or if hostilities may resume.
