Washington | Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has launched a strategic diplomatic push in the Gulf, forging closer defense ties with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The move comes as Ukraine seeks to counter growing security threats linked to Iran and its expanding military coordination with Russia.
Zelenskyy’s visit follows his recent trip to Saudi Arabia and is being viewed as part of a broader effort to build a new “security shield” by aligning with key Gulf nations. His outreach focuses on defense cooperation, advanced air defense systems, and safeguarding critical global energy routes.
Talks with UAE Focus on Iran Threat and Maritime Security
During his meeting with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Zelenskyy raised concerns over potential Iranian attacks and the security of the Strait of Hormuz—a vital artery for global oil supplies.
Highlighting Ukraine’s experience in countering Russian missile and drone strikes, Zelenskyy offered to share advanced air defense expertise with the UAE.
