New Delhi: The Indian women’s cricket team, fresh off their historic ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 victory, has been shortlisted for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday.
The Laureus World Sports Awards, established in 2000, honour the most outstanding and inspirational sporting achievements globally each year. The nomination underscores the team’s landmark triumph, marking India’s first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup title — a historic milestone for Indian women’s cricket.
The team’s path to glory in 2025 was defined by composed and resilient performances, defeating top-ranked sides and demonstrating consistency and determination throughout the tournament. Experts view the victory not only as a sporting milestone but also as a reflection of the growing support and investment in women’s cricket in India over the past decade.
The Indian side has been shortlisted alongside notable international teams including Paris Saint-Germain (football), McLaren Formula 1 Team, the European Ryder Cup team (golf), the England women’s football team, and the Oklahoma City Thunder (basketball). Shortlists are determined through votes by more than 1,000 sports media representatives from over 70 countries.
The winners will be announced at the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony in Madrid on April 20, 2026.
BCCI President Mithun Manhas hailed the nomination as a moment of pride, emphasizing that it highlighted the women’s team’s exceptional performance and historic achievement. Meanwhile, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia described the 2025 World Cup victory as a “watershed moment” that has inspired a new generation of young girls to pursue cricket professionally.
