Patna/New Delhi: Political circles in Bihar are witnessing intense speculation over the possible transition of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to the Rajya Sabha, a move that could potentially trigger a major political reshuffle in the state. Reports suggest that Kumar may file his nomination for the Upper House seat in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, although no official confirmation has yet been issued.
The discussion around Kumar’s possible entry into the Rajya Sabha has revived debates about his political future and the leadership transition within Bihar’s ruling alliance. The veteran leader, who recently turned 75, has been at the centre of Bihar politics for nearly two decades and is widely credited with shaping the state’s governance and development agenda.
Political observers note that the rumours about Kumar’s “exit plan” from state politics have surfaced repeatedly over the years. His name had earlier been floated for positions such as the presidential and vice-presidential offices, but those possibilities never materialised. Despite periodic speculation regarding his health and political future, Kumar has continued to remain active in state governance and administrative affairs.
The current buzz gained momentum during the ongoing political discussions surrounding the Rajya Sabha elections. Sources within political circles claim that if the opposition alliance does not field an additional candidate, the ruling National Democratic Alliance nominees could be elected unopposed.
At the same time, conversations about leadership succession in Bihar have also intensified. The possible entry of Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, into active politics has become a major talking point. While Kumar has long maintained an image of distancing himself from dynastic politics, speculation suggests Nishant could soon join the Janata Dal (United) and may be entrusted with a prominent role in the party’s future.

If Kumar eventually moves to the Rajya Sabha, attention will immediately shift to the question of Bihar’s next Chief Minister. Among the names doing the rounds are Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, both considered influential leaders within the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Despite the widespread speculation, political analysts caution that the situation remains fluid. Kumar has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to take unexpected political decisions, including shifting alliances between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Mahagathbandhan in the past.
For now, all eyes remain on the upcoming Rajya Sabha nomination process and the internal discussions within the ruling alliance. Whether the veteran leader continues to steer Bihar’s government or chooses a new political role at the national level is expected to become clearer in the coming days.
