Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence at IIT Kanpur; UP Students to Receive Advanced Training in Japan

Lucknow — In a major push toward clean energy leadership, Uttar Pradesh is set to strengthen its green hydrogen ecosystem through international collaboration and academic innovation. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent visit to Japan has resulted in a landmark MoU with Yamanashi Prefecture, placing green hydrogen at the core of bilateral cooperation.

The agreement covers production, advanced technology transfer, research collaboration, skill development and industrial applications. Yamanashi, regarded as a global leader in hydrogen technology, operates cutting-edge “Power-to-Gas” systems that convert solar and wind energy into hydrogen through electrolysis for storage and clean transportation use.

A key highlight of the partnership is academic exchange. Students from leading technical institutions in Uttar Pradesh will receive advanced training in Japan, gaining hands-on exposure to hydrogen production, storage systems, safety protocols and industrial deployment.

Simultaneously, a Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence is being developed at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The centre will focus on reducing production costs, improving safe storage technologies and developing green mobility solutions, linking academic research directly with industrial implementation.

The state has already initiated on-ground action. In Gorakhpur’s Khaniyapur village, a green hydrogen blending plant — inaugurated by the Chief Minister — is supplying hydrogen-mixed CNG and PNG, expected to cut nearly 500 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

With ₹2,104 crore proposed in the 2026–27 budget for additional energy development, experts believe this integrated strategy of research, training and industrial use could position Uttar Pradesh as a national leader in green hydrogen innovation.
