Snoring is Dangerous: Dr. Surya Kant

Sleep Certification Course Workshop to be Organized at KGMU

Lucknow: The ICS Sleep Certification Course workshop will be organized on 22 February 2026 at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Scientific Convention Center, King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. This hands-on sleep workshop is being organized under the joint aegis of the Indian Chest Society and the Snoring and Sleep Related Disorders Society.

The Workshop Directors are Dr. Surya Kant, Founder President, Snoring and Sleep Related Disorders Society, and Dr. Amita Nene (Mumbai), Secretary, Indian Chest Society. The Workshop Coordinators are Dr. Jyoti Bajpai and Dr. Abhishek Tandon.

Dr. Surya Kant, Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine, informed that sleep medicine experts and doctors from across the country will participate in this one-day workshop. The workshop will provide detailed training on snoring, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), sleep study, CPAP treatment, interpretation of sleep study reports, use of various PAP devices, and modern management of sleep disorders.

Dr. Surya Kant said that people do not consider snoring a health problem; rather, they believe that a person who snores is sleeping very well and peacefully. However, snoring is very dangerous for our health. He explained that people who snore do not get proper sleep throughout the night, and their sleep is repeatedly disturbed. At the same time, the oxygen level in the body decreases, which causes damage to every organ. Snoring increases the risk of several diseases such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), blood pressure, heart attack, and diabetes.

Dr. Surya Kant advised all vehicle drivers that if they snore, they must undergo proper evaluation and testing for snoring. Otherwise, due to inadequate sleep at night, such individuals experience excessive daytime sleepiness, which can lead to road accidents. Millions of road accidents worldwide occur due to snoring-related sleep disorders.

Dr. Surya Kant, former President of the Indian Chest Society, stated that snoring is not merely a common problem but may be an indication of a serious disease such as obstructive sleep apnea, which increases the risk of hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and road accidents. He added that the need for trained physicians in the field of sleep medicine is increasing rapidly, and such workshops are extremely useful in training doctors with modern techniques.

The workshop will include academic sessions along with hands-on training, covering sleep lab setup, sleep scoring, interpretation of sleep study reports, use of PAP devices, and practical management of sleep disorders. An exit examination will be conducted at the end of the workshop, and successful participants will be awarded certificates.

Dr. Surya Kant stated that such workshops play an important role in increasing awareness about sleep disorders among doctors and in providing better treatment to patients. He appealed to all doctors to participate in this workshop and enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of sleep medicine.

The Vice Chancellor of KGMU, Padma Shri Dr. Sonia Nityanand, extended her best wishes to Dr. Surya Kant and Dr. Amita Nene for the success of this workshop to be held on 22 February.
