Yogi Government’s Initiative to Make Jewar International Airport India’s Greenest Airport

  • Net-Zero Airport Being Developed with Zurich Airport Group Collaboration
  • Energy-Efficient Terminal, EV Charging, Solar Power and Sustainable Water & Waste Management to Set New Benchmarks

Lucknow/Greater Noida: One of the Uttar Pradesh government’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, the Noida International Airport at Jewar, is set to emerge not only as a major aviation hub but also as a national model for environmental sustainability. In line with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision, the airport is being developed as India’s greenest airport, based on a net-zero concept in collaboration with the Zurich Airport Group.

In a significant milestone, Jewar Airport has already earned the distinction of becoming India’s first airport to receive IGBC Green Campus certification. The terminal building has been specially designed to ensure minimal consumption of energy, water and other resources, while maximizing operational efficiency and environmental protection.

Electric Mobility and Smart Infrastructure
According to Shailendra Kumar Bhatia, Additional CEO of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), 20 percent of the airport’s parking area will be equipped with standard and fast charging facilities for electric vehicles. All vehicles used for airside operations will be 100 percent electric, with charging points installed at multiple locations across the airport campus.

Solar Farm Spread Over 82.94 Acres
As part of the Yogi government’s green energy vision, a solar farm spread across 82.94 acres is being developed within the airport premises. The solar facility will generate approximately 51,966 megawatt-hours of renewable energy, significantly reducing the airport’s carbon footprint and dependence on conventional power sources.

To ensure sustainable water management, two rainwater harvesting ponds are being constructed, which will serve as long-term water resources. Additionally, plans are underway to install a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) plant to operate airport vehicles, diesel generators and other systems on green fuel.

Comprehensive Waste and Environmental Management
The airport will also feature an advanced solid waste management system focused on waste segregation, recycling and scientific disposal. A dedicated Environmental Monitoring Plan has been prepared to ensure continuous monitoring of air, water, soil, waste and sewage parameters on a monthly basis.

Once operational, Jewar International Airport is expected to generate significant investment and employment opportunities, while simultaneously reinforcing the Yogi government’s commitment to green infrastructure and sustainable development. The project is poised to give a new dimension to eco-friendly aviation in India.
