Four Years After Its Grand Inauguration, Kashi Vishwanath Dham Welcomes Over 260 Million Devotees

Varanasi — The transformation of Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham has rewritten the modern narrative of religious tourism in India. As the iconic spiritual complex prepares to complete four years of its inauguration on December 13, 2025, the footfall of devotees has crossed an extraordinary 260 million—a milestone that underscores its global spiritual magnetism.

A Vision Turned Reality: Kashi Shines on the World Map

Inaugurated on 13 December 2021, the renewed Kashi Vishwanath Dham has emerged as a model of cultural preservation, infrastructural excellence, and seamless religious tourism. The Uttar Pradesh government’s comprehensive development drive—marked by improved connectivity, expanded facilities, stringent security, flyovers, parking systems, and easier access routes—has turned Varanasi into a world-class pilgrimage hub.

Officials note that the city’s rapid transformation is now being recognised on the global religious tourism map, with tourists from across continents visiting to experience the sanctity and splendour of the ancient shrine.

Devotee Numbers Reach Historic Heights

According to Vishwesh Bhushan Mishra, Chief Executive Officer of the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust, the influx of pilgrims has soared with unprecedented momentum. As of December 2, 2025, the dham has recorded:

  • Total visitors: 26,23,56,000+
  • Average annual footfall post-inauguration: 6.5 crore+ devotees

Year-wise footfall since the inauguration:

  • 2021 (Dec 13–31): 48,42,716
  • 2022: 7,11,47,210
  • 2023: 5,73,10,104
  • 2024: 6,23,90,302
  • 2025 (Jan–2 Dec): 6,66,66,511

The rise highlights the dham’s status as one of the world’s most visited spiritual destinations. Temple authorities also confirm a notable increase in foreign tourists drawn to the renewed grandeur and religious ambience.

World-Class Facilities Enhancing the Pilgrim Experience

The redevelopment of the dham has not only revived its spiritual aura but also dramatically elevated the comfort and accessibility of worshippers. Authorities have implemented a series of pilgrim-friendly amenities, including:

  • Weather-protective German hangars
  • Heat-resistant walking mats
  • Coolers and drinking water stations
  • Wheelchairs and golf carts for elderly, differently abled, and needy devotees
  • Seasonal canopies, ORS counters, and round-the-clock medical facilities

These measures have made the journey to Baba Vishwanath’s courtyard significantly smoother, irrespective of season or physical limitation.

Yogi Government’s Development Push Reshapes the City

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s personal engagement with the project has played a pivotal role in the dham’s rise. His frequent visits, ongoing reviews, and instructions for continuous improvement have ensured the highest level of facility, safety, and spiritual ambience for devotees.

The city’s holistic development — from widened roads and modernised ghats to robust security systems and expanded tourism infrastructure — has benefited both residents and visitors. Varanasi is now widely acknowledged as a rejuvenated cultural centre where heritage and modernity coexist harmoniously.

A Monumental Expansion: From 3,000 to 500,000 Sq Ft

One of the most striking achievements of the redevelopment is the dham’s massive expansion—from a confined 3,000 sq ft area to a sprawling 5 lakh sq ft spiritual complex. This transformation has eased crowd movement, enabled systematic darshan, and restored the sanctity of the surrounding heritage zone.

A New Era for Kashi

As the dham completes four years this month, its impact is unmistakable. The surge in devotees, improved facilities, and elevation of Varanasi on the global pilgrimage map reflect a historic rebirth. The renewed Kashi Vishwanath Dham stands today not only as a spiritual beacon but also as a symbol of India’s evolving commitment to preserving heritage while embracing progress.

With devotees continuing to throng Baba Vishwanath’s abode in record numbers, the dham’s remarkable journey is set to inspire future models of religious tourism across the world.
