MJPRU Approves New Sports Science Degree and Yoga-Based Courses Under NEP 2020

Bareilly: Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (MJPRU), Bareilly, has approved a series of new academic programmes in sports science, physical education and yoga, marking a significant step towards promoting holistic education in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The decisions were taken during the Vidyaparishad (Academic Council) meeting held at the university’s RIF Building, where members gave their approval to introduce a Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports (B.P.E.S.) programme along with two value-added courses focused on yoga and physical fitness.

The newly approved B.P.E.S. undergraduate programme will commence from the 2026–27 academic session at the university campus with an initial intake of 40 students. The Academic Council also approved the programme’s ordinances, curriculum structure and detailed syllabus for the first two academic years (Semesters I to IV). The course is expected to create new opportunities for students aspiring to build careers in sports science, physical education, sports coaching and fitness management.

In another major initiative, the university has approved a two-credit value-added course titled “Indian Knowledge System: Yogic Heritage and Healthy Living”. Developed jointly by the Departments of Philosophy and Physical Education, the course aligns with the University Grants Commission’s Indian Knowledge System initiative under NEP 2020.

The programme will combine theoretical instruction on Indian philosophical traditions with practical training in yogic practices, including Shatkarma, Surya Namaskar, asanas, pranayama, meditation and yoga nidra. University officials said the course aims to promote multidisciplinary learning, holistic well-being and value-based education from the 2026–27 session.

The Academic Council also approved another two-credit value-added course, “Fit India”, which has been designed to encourage students to adopt healthier lifestyles and actively participate in fitness and sports activities. The course is expected to strengthen the objectives of the national Fit India Movement by promoting physical fitness and wellness among students.

Welcoming the decisions, Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.P. Singh said the university is committed to introducing programmes that support the all-round development of students in accordance with the vision of NEP 2020.

“The introduction of the B.P.E.S. programme and value-added courses on yoga, Indian knowledge systems and fitness reflects our commitment to academic excellence as well as the physical and mental well-being of students. We encourage students, parents and affiliated colleges to take full advantage of these new opportunities,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor added that the initiatives would help establish the university as a centre of excellence not only in academics but also in sports, health and holistic education by integrating India’s traditional knowledge systems with modern higher education.
