Experts Advise on Decarbonizing Uttar Pradesh and Promoting Green Built Environment at CII Conclave

Lucknow – The second edition of the UP Sustainability Conclave, jointly organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), commenced on Friday, focusing on “Decarbonizing Uttar Pradesh: Promoting Zero and Green Built Environment.” Industry leaders and government policymakers participated in discussions on pathways to a sustainable and low-carbon future, including panel sessions on Decarbonizing Uttar Pradesh: Policy & Regulatory Pathways and Decarbonizing Construction: The Role of Emerging Green Technologies.

During the event, Yawar Ali Shah, Co-founder and CEO of AMA Herbal and convenor of the CII MSME panel, emphasized the importance of clean air and water, urging conservation measures to pass on a sustainable environment to future generations. He highlighted the need for water usage reduction in homes and shared that his factory’s rainwater harvesting system collects 100,000–150,000 liters of water from just half an hour of rainfall. Shah also stressed increasing green cover and preventing hard constructions around trees to preserve their carbon absorption capacity.

Naveen Kumar, Director of Rolling Stock & Systems, Lucknow Metro, noted that the metro’s 300+ water harvesting units help conserve approximately 5 million liters of water annually.

In the Policy & Regulatory Pathways panel, Anjani Pandey, Business Head at Omaxe, said that real estate, like other sectors, is increasingly focusing on sustainability due to growing public awareness and government regulations. While green construction raises initial project costs, it ensures environmental protection and energy efficiency, meeting rising consumer demand for sustainable housing.

Other panelists included Anil Kumar Mishra (Town & Country Planner, UP Govt.), Gaurav Pandey (Chief General Manager, UPSRTC Technical), B.S. Laspal (Chief Engineer, Military Engineering Services), Masarrat Noor Khan (Chief Engineer, PWD), and Chetan Tyagi (Joint GM, Environment & Social, UP Metro). IGBC Lucknow Chapter COO Amit Srivastava concluded the session with a vote of thanks.

The second session, Decarbonizing Construction: The Role of Emerging Green Technologies, focused on innovative approaches to reduce carbon emissions, including electric vehicles and sustainable water management systems, highlighting practical strategies for a greener built environment in Uttar Pradesh.
