BEIJING—In his New Year’s address on Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s unwavering stance on the reunification with Taiwan and emphasized a broader vision of international cooperation to build a shared future for humanity.
“We Chinese are members of the same family on both sides of the Taiwan Strait,” Xi stated, reinforcing China’s narrative of historical and cultural ties. “No one can ever break the ties of kinship that bind us together, and no one can ever halt the current trend of China’s reunification.”
Focus on Unity and Global Cooperation
In his remarks, Xi underscored the importance of fostering global partnerships amidst accelerating global changes. He called for rising above divisions and working collectively to address humanity’s challenges.
“China will collaborate with all nations to foster camaraderie and collaboration, improve cross-cultural learning, and create a global society with a common destiny,” Xi said, highlighting China’s commitment to multilateralism and international dialogue.
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council Investigates Allegations
The address coincided with heightened tensions over allegations of China’s “united front” tactics aimed at politically influencing Taiwanese youth. On December 28, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) announced an investigation into claims made in a YouTube video by Taiwanese rapper Chen Po-yuan and YouTuber “Pa Chiung.”
The video detailed strategies allegedly employed by China to sway young Taiwanese, including promoting Chinese ID registrations and engaging small-scale influencers through Taiwan-focused organizations.
The Taipei Times reported that Lin Jingdong, assistant director of the CCP-affiliated Strait Herald, spoke about these tactics, which include initiatives like the Taiwan Youth Entrepreneurship Park in Fujian Province.
Xi’s Vision Amid Challenges
Xi’s address sought to project strength and unity amid growing scrutiny over China’s policies and its relationship with Taiwan. The speech also highlighted China’s role as a global partner, calling for collaboration to address global challenges and build a better future for all nations.
As cross-strait relations continue to be a focal point, the interplay between China’s ambitions and Taiwan’s resistance remains central to regional stability.
