New York: Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed clear dissatisfaction with his team’s performance after they were held to a 1–1 draw by Morocco in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C clash on Sunday.
Despite Vinícius Júnior rescuing Brazil with a first-half equaliser, Ancelotti admitted his side fell short of expectations, particularly in possession and overall balance, as Morocco matched—and at times outplayed—the South American giants.
Morocco, widely regarded as strong contenders after their impressive run to the semi-finals in the previous edition, stunned Brazil with an early breakthrough. Ismaïl Saibari capitalised on defensive lapses to put the African side ahead in the 21st minute, exposing gaps in Brazil’s backline.
Brazil responded through Vinícius in the 32nd minute, whose composed finish brought the Seleção back into the contest. However, neither side managed to find a winner in a tightly contested second half.
Reflecting on the match, Ancelotti did not hide his frustration with his team’s display.
“We did not play well. There were too many challenges, the team was unbalanced, and we lost too many balls. We need to improve in those areas,” he said after the match. “I am not disappointed with the result, but I am not satisfied either.”

Morocco impressed with their intensity and structure, frequently troubling Brazil through the flanks, where Achraf Hakimi and Bilal El Khannouss created constant pressure. Their midfield dominance also disrupted Brazil’s rhythm, limiting their control of the game.
Brazil’s defensive issues were highlighted in the opening goal, where Saibari outmanoeuvred the experienced centre-back pairing of Marquinhos and Gabriel to give Morocco the lead. Although Vinícius restored parity, Brazil struggled to assert authority thereafter.
Looking ahead, Brazil will aim to bounce back when they face Haiti in their next group match on June 20. Forward Neymar, who is recovering from a calf injury, is unlikely to feature, with Ancelotti confirming that the star attacker is still working on his rehabilitation.
Morocco will also return to action on June 20, when they take on Scotland in their next Group C fixture.
