Freebies Won’t Eradicate Poverty: Narayana Murthy at TiECon Mumbai 2025

Mumbai: Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murthy has asserted that poverty cannot be eradicated through free giveaways, but rather through job creation by innovative entrepreneurs. Speaking at the TiECon Mumbai 2025 event, Murthy emphasized the importance of fostering entrepreneurship to build businesses that generate employment opportunities.

Addressing a gathering of entrepreneurs, Murthy urged them to focus on creating more companies and expanding businesses. He stated, “If we are capable of building innovative enterprises, poverty will disappear like morning dew under the sunlight. It cannot be eliminated through freebies.”

Murthy expressed his confidence in the entrepreneurial community, saying, “I have no doubt that each of you will generate hundreds or thousands of jobs, thereby addressing the issue of poverty. You cannot solve the problem of poverty by distributing free gifts—no country has succeeded in doing so.”

His statement comes at a time when there is an ongoing debate over the distribution of free benefits and their economic impact. Murthy’s remarks have sparked discussions on the long-term sustainability of welfare programs versus the role of entrepreneurship in economic development.
