A.K. Sharma Advocates Citizen-Centric, Technology-Driven Urban Development at National Urban Conclave 2026

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Urban Development and Energy Minister A.K. Sharma emphasised the need for forward-looking policies, modern technology and efficient urban services to build smart, modern and citizen-centric cities while participating in the National Urban Conclave 2026 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Saturday.

The two-day conference, being held on October 24 and 25, is themed ‘Urban Rising: Rethinking Urban Systems, Solutions and Delivery’. It brings together policymakers, experts and institutions to discuss the challenges of rapid urbanisation, modern infrastructure, improved municipal management and the delivery of quality urban services.

Addressing the gathering, Sharma called upon urban development policymakers and experts to formulate long-term policies and practical solutions in response to changing urban conditions and citizens’ growing expectations. He stressed the importance of technology-driven systems, better urban planning, robust infrastructure and effective service delivery to make cities more organised, modern and convenient.

“Urban development is not merely about expanding roads, buildings and other infrastructure. It is also about providing citizens with a clean, safe, well-organised and convenient environment,” Sharma said, underlining the need to ensure that urban development plans address present requirements while remaining equipped to meet future challenges.

The minister also emphasised the adoption of modern technology, innovation and improved management systems to enhance the quality and effectiveness of urban services. He said municipal bodies must become more accountable, transparent and results-oriented to achieve sustainable urban development goals.

Highlighting the importance of coordination, Sharma called for stronger collaboration among the Central and state governments, urban local bodies and expert institutions. He noted that sharing experiences and adopting successful practices from different states could help make urban development programmes more effective.

The National Urban Conclave 2026 serves as a platform for shaping the future direction of urban development in India, exchanging experiences among states and exploring ways to improve urban systems, solutions and service delivery. Discussions at the conference are expected to encourage fresh policy approaches for developing modern, smart, inclusive and citizen-focused cities.

Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu, urban development ministers from other states and Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Department Principal Secretary P. Guru Prasad were among those present at the event.
