France Edge Past Paraguay to Reach World Cup Quarter-Finals

Philadelphia: Two-time world champions France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay at Philadelphia Stadium on Sunday. A second-half penalty converted by star striker Kylian Mbappé proved decisive as France overcame a spirited Paraguayan side and secured a quarter-final clash against Morocco on July 9 in Boston.

The match-winning strike was Mbappé’s seventh goal of the tournament, drawing him level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. The goal also marked a significant milestone, becoming France’s 150th goal in FIFA World Cup history. With that achievement, France joined Brazil, Germany and Italy among the select nations to have reached the landmark. Mbappé further enhanced his own record by becoming the highest-scoring player against South American opposition in World Cup history, with seven goals.

Paraguay, which had reached the Round of 16 after eliminating Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout, proved to be stubborn opponents throughout the contest. France dominated possession and created the majority of chances in the first half, but the outstanding performance of Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill kept the score level.

France increased the intensity after the break under the leadership of Ousmane Dembélé, who came close to breaking the deadlock with a powerful effort that struck the outer side-netting. Gill continued to frustrate the French attack, producing an excellent save to deny a long-range strike from Manu Koné.

The decisive moment arrived in the 69th minute. Substitute Désiré Doué, who had entered the match eight minutes earlier in place of Bradley Barcola, was brought down inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty to France. Mbappé stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, giving France a 1-0 lead.

The goal ultimately proved enough to separate the two sides. Paraguay continued to battle until the final whistle, but France’s disciplined defensive display ensured the narrow advantage remained intact. Mbappé’s strike also extended his impressive record of scoring in three consecutive World Cup Round of 16 matches.

Deschamps Praises Team’s Composure

France head coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged the challenge posed by Paraguay and praised his players for remaining focused throughout the encounter.

“We knew this would be a difficult match. Paraguay tested us in every possible way and defended with great determination. Their players are physically strong and extremely organized. South American teams are always tough opponents, and victories against them are never easy. I am pleased with the way our players performed as a united group and earned a place in the quarter-finals,” Deschamps said after the match.

Mbappé Focused on Morocco Challenge

Match-winner Mbappé said France had expected a difficult contest and believed the experience would help the team in the later stages of the tournament.

“We knew exactly the kind of match Paraguay would make it. It was a demanding and competitive game, but those are the matches that help a team grow. We showed that France can do more than just play attacking football. Every team uses its strengths in different ways, and ultimately the objective is to win. Our focus now shifts completely to Morocco. They are an excellent team, and we know we will have to be at our best in the quarter-finals,” Mbappé said.

France will now renew acquaintances with Morocco in a highly anticipated quarter-final encounter. The French side defeated Morocco 2-0 in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, and the Atlas Lions will be eager for an opportunity to rewrite that chapter as both teams chase a place in the last four of the tournament.
