Beijing: The 24th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is going to be held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. At the same time, the Chinese Foreign Ministry informed on Sunday that Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). At the same time, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India.
The Chinese Ministry said that from July 2 to 6, President Jinping will attend the 24th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO in Astana. Officials say that the summit is expected to discuss the situation in Afghanistan, the Russia-Ukraine war and promoting overall security cooperation among SCO member countries.
The SCO includes India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Earlier, India’s Foreign Ministry said that the country will be represented by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Officials say that a meeting between Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is likely during the summit. If this happens, it will be the first high-level meeting between Indian and Chinese officials after the formation of the third government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the recent general elections in India.
The SCO focuses on regional security, counter-terrorism and economic cooperation among its member countries. The organisation covers more than 60 per cent of the Eurasian landmass, 40 per cent of the world’s population and 30 per cent of the global GDP.
